Chapter Thirteen

When I get to the bus stop we agreed to meet at, Kiba is already there, looking at his phone. He has his school backpack on and a backwards baseball cap I've never seen. I don't say anything. He doesn't look up. I just slip into my place standing next to him and we wait.

I get bored and glance over at his phone. He has the bus schedule and a map pulled up.

"How much is it going to be?" I ask.

Kiba jumps. He looks up at me with shock. Did he really not know I was here?

"What?" He says, looking at his phone again.

"The bus rides?" I say, staring at the top of his head. His brown bangs poke out of the hat he's wearing. "Like...getting there. How much? I brought some cash."

"Oh," he says. "Shouldn't be too much." He finally looks up from his phone again and we actually make eye contact. "It's about a twenty minute drive by car, the bus schedule is saying it'll be about forty minutes and we only have to switch buses once. So probably only four dollars for each of us. Two for each bus."

I smile and stare into his eyes, hoping fiercely he doesn't look away. Why don't I want him to look away? "That's not bad at all."

He looks down again and I take another peek at his phone. This time he has his "Notes" app pulled up. I squint my eyes, trying to see what he's typing.

He laughs suddenly. "Stop stalking me!" He looks up and dramatically pulls his phone into his chest.

I laugh too, but I'm actually pretty embarrassed he caught me looking. "Sorry, haha. Just curious. I'm bored is all. When will the first bus get here?"

"I was just typing in the bus numbers and the times into my phone so I had it all in one place," he says, showing me his "Notes" app. I nod. "It should be here in ten minutes."

"Okay, cool."

"Cool."

We wait in silence. I think we're both nervous about doing something new, especially something our parents and teachers will be very upset about. I know I am, but I think Kiba feels the same.

He continues to stare at his phone, so I pull mine out and do the same just so I don't feel so awkward. No texts from my siblings yet. I swipe around my phone for a bit, looking for something to do, and I eventually settle on playing this car racing game I have on my phone. It's not good quality because it's on my phone and it's free. It glitches a lot and the graphics aren't something special but it gives me something to do.

While I'm tapping on my phone, though, I'm mostly thinking about Kiba. I wonder what he's thinking right now. I sneak a glance at his phone that he practically has his face buried in. He's looking at the weather app. So if he's not even doing anything, why aren't we talking? Why am I pretending to be doing something important on my phone when he isn't either?

A cloud in the sky moves and the back of my neck is suddenly hit with the hot sun. I put my phone down and look up. I guess I hadn't even noticed that today was that cloudy. But the sun feels nice.

"Woah the sun just came out of nowhere," I say and awkwardly laugh.

"Yeah," Kiba looks up at the sky but I look into his eyes. It's like he's avoiding me.

He sticks his phone in his jacket pocket and closes his eyes while letting out a sigh.

"What's wrong?" I finally ask.
