Chapter Three

When we get to Kiba's house, I take my bike out of the truck and set it in their driveway. Kiba says I can leave it there. Hana walks inside through the front door but Kiba turns to me instead.

"Okay, so...we have a lot of dogs. I thought I should tell you so you're prepared. They're good dogs but they're very protective."

"Okay..."

"Once I let them know you're not a threat, they'll calm down but they'll probably bark at you a lot."

"Okay."

We walk up the front porch and Kiba opens the door. There's a small white dog sitting calmly by the door, almost like it was waiting for Kiba. The dog looks happy until it turns its gaze to me and jumps up on all fours growling.

As soon as the little dog starts growling, three other, much bigger dogs run to the door and start growling as well.

Now I'm scared. Two of these dogs are gray and huge, one is brown and still pretty big. I can definitely imagine them ripping my throat out.

"Hey, hey..." Kiba says with his hands out in front of him. "He's good." The brown dog barks and Kiba snaps at it, "Hey! No bark." He points at me. "Good."

There's no way they actually understand that, right?

To my surprise, the brown dog backs off a bit. The four of them still look unhappy with my presence and I'm suddenly wishing I could just finish this dumb project on my own.

"Akamaru, come," Kiba says and the three bigger dogs move to the side. The small white dog steps towards Kiba. Kiba reaches over and picks the small dog up. Then he turns to me. "This is Akamaru. He's my dog and he's pretty protective of me. That," he points at the brown dog, "is Kuromaru and she is his mom. So when he's upset, she's upset." Kiba steps towards me with Akamaru. "Here, just let him smell you."

"Okay..." I reach out my hand and the little dog sniffs. The growling stops. I guess he's decided that I am good. He looks at Kiba and Kiba nods, then the dog gives my hand a lick.

What the fuck? I can't tell if this is weird, scary, or funny.

Kiba sets Akamaru down and points at me. "Kankuro." The dog gives a little yip. "Tell the others that Kankuro is good."

Akamaru goes back inside and the other dogs glance back at me before following the smaller dog.

"Sorry," Kiba says, rubbing the back of his neck and eyeing me. "I know it's kind of weird at first. I swear I'm pretty normal other than the dog thing."

"It's fine," I chuckle. We step inside and take our shoes off. "How many dogs do you have?"

"Seven."

"Damn."

"I know right. But I love it. I grew up around dogs, so they're family."

I sigh. It would be so cool to have a dog. "Yeah, that sounds nice."

"Alright, my room is upstairs. We could work at the kitchen table or something but the dogs would bother us." He starts walking up the stairs and I follow.

...

Kiba's room is not messy but it's not insanely clean either, there's a few things laying around. But it's cozy. There's a twin sized bed in the far corner of the square room, a desk and chair across from it, and a bean bag chair with a dog bed next to it. It's carpeted and has posters and pictures around the walls.
