Chapter Fourteen
The bus comes and no one is on it. We chat during the ride until we finally get to our stop. I follow Kiba off the bus and into a small neighborhood. While we're walking and Kiba is talking, I glance between the house at the lake. The water is blue and unmoving. Wouldn't it be so cool to be able to hang out here every summer? Kiba is so lucky.
We make it to his family's yellow lake house. It's two stories, but skinny.
"Do you have a key or something?" I say, following Kiba up the long driveway.
"Or something," he replies. We get to the door and there's a keypad to open it. He puts in some numbers and it unlocks.
"Fancy." I follow him inside. The kitchen is the first thing we walk into, black countertops and wooden floors. There's a small square table with four chairs around it.
Kiba drops his bag in the middle of the floor and slips his shoes off. "Well, make yourself at home. We've got the whole place to ourselves!" he says, yelling the last part through the empty house.
After taking my shoes off, I walk through the kitchen with my mouth wide out. This place is so nice. Everything is clean and shiny. I thought Kiba's house back in town was nice, but damn! I walk into the living room and there's a giant flat screen TV and nice leather couches sitting on top of a plush gray rug. I look out the glass sliding door in the back and there's the lake. Nice and blue and big. Just what I expected a lake to look like but I still stare. It's so pretty, especially with the sun shining on the slowly moving water. I can't believe Kiba gets to come here every summer. At the end of the lawn, there's a wooden dock and a nice, off-white pontoon with two blue stripes around the middle.
"Oh yeah, that's the boat."
I jump and put my arms out in front of me. I guess I didn't realize Kiba had followed me through the house. "You scared the shit outta me," I say, holding my chest and laughing.
"Sorry," he laughs, "you looked kind of zoned out so I wanted to say something." He rubs the back of his neck and glances away.
"Yeah, sorry. This place is just so nice. It's crazy." I look back at the leather couches and the huge TV.
"Care for a tour?" Kiba smirks.
"Is that even a question?!"
...
After showing me what I had already seen (the kitchen, living room and back deck), Kiba opens a white door and shows me the shiny, clean bathroom. Who thought a bathroom could be so clean? The door next to it is the laundry room, also very clean with lots of towels stacked up on the shelves and in cloth baskets.
Kiba points to another door in the kitchen as we make our way to the stairs, "That's the pantry, but there's probably nothing in there but nonperishables."
We head upstairs.
The stairs and hallway have a fluffy, gray rug. I want to stand on it barefoot, but I keep my socks on. To the right of the top of the stairs is the bathroom. This one has a shower with a clear glass door. And do I even have to say it? The bathroom was spotless.
Down the hall there are three doors and one door at the end of the hall across from the bathroom. Kiba opens the first door on our right. "This is the room Hana usually sleeps in," he says.
I peer in. It's small but has a beautiful queen sized bed in the middle with fluffy, white blankets and a tall mattress. I think if I were to lay on that bed, I would fall asleep and never wake up. There's a white nightstand, two huge closet doors, and the walls are a tealish color.
Kiba closes the door and keeps walking. "We got to pick our rooms and she chose the small one for whatever reason. She says it's 'comfortable,'" he uses air quotes. He stops in front of the only door on the left. "And this is my room. I chose the biggest out of the three."
He sounds proud of his choice in a summer bedroom, so as he opens the door, I'm expecting the room to look similar to his room at home with music and movie posters on the walls and figurines of characters he likes on shelves. But when he opens the door, it's as plain as Hana's room. The walls are a very light peach and there is a queen sized bed with fluffy white blankets. The room is bigger and has a nightstand, a large dresser, and sliding closet doors. There are two big windows along the longest wall with the shades closed.
"See, this one is cooler, right?"
"Yeah," I say. "But why does it look like a hotel room? None of your stuff is here?"
"Well," Kiba says, "We're only here over the summer and sure, it's a pain to move everything, but my parents have people over a lot. Like on New Year's Eve and their anniversary and stuff, they have friends over without Hana and me, so they sleep in these rooms." He shrugs. "So we have to keep it neutral."
"Oh, okay. What's in the dressers and closets then?"
"Extra towels and bedding. But over the summer I obviously put my stuff in them."
"Gotcha," I say nodding.
"Okay!" KIba says, suddenly turning out of the room. I follow him. "Now for the actual guest room." He opens the door on the right, next to Hana's room. It's smaller than Kiba's but bigger than Hana's. Light blue walls, queen sized bed, fluffy white blankets, huge closet, nightstand, dresser. They're all the same, really.
"Nice," I say.
"And then this is my parents room," Kiba says, shutting the guest room door and opening the one at the end of the hall. He opens it up and I nearly gasp.
There's a king sized bed to the right with coral colored blankets and a couch and TV to the left. It's a whole living room in this one room! There's two dressers and a large closet to the right of the bed, which has two nightstands on either side. Further to the left is the master bathroom and Kiba shows me the huge bathtub and glass doored shower. I haven't taken a bath since I was a kid. I kind of want to now because it looks very relaxing. We walk back into the main room and Kiba flings himself on the king sized bed. He laughs then turns on his back, propping himself on his elbows.
"Come on!" He says. "I never get to lay on this bed and it's soooo comfortable!"
I hesitate, nervously licking my lips. My hands are shaking. I'm not sure why. "Um...are you sure it's okay?" I finally say.
"Of course! Nobody's here." He rolls his eyes. He scoots over a bit so I step forward and sit on the bed. "Don't just sit there! You gotta lay down! Feel how nice it is!"
I swing my legs on the bed but stay sitting up. Although it's a huge bed, I feel too close to Kiba. I don't hate it but I don't love it either.
There's a hand on my shoulder pulling me down and all of a sudden, I'm on my back. I look over in shock. Kiba has rolled onto his stomach now and he keeps his hand on me as I feel my cheeks get red. "See! Isn't it comfortable?"
"Yeah," I say. And it is. It really is comfortable.
I feel like crying all of a sudden.
