We change into black clothing. We're preparing on a small, three-story building on the opposite side of the fancy apartment across the street. Despite this being a small city, it still is costly to live in some of these places.
He brings out the sniper, angling it in the direction of the girl's apartment window. He puts a suppressor on to make the noise die down some, but it won't completely be silent. Once I fire, we need to pack up and leave as fast as we can.
I have one chance to do this right, but it should be a clear shot from this position. Now all we have to do is wait, and when I pull the trigger, Jin has to zoom in on his camera and take the pictures.
We're already lying down on the roof, ready for her to come home at any moment. The boss has always given us specific times and knows exactly when and where the targets are; it's kind of horrifying in a way. He can gather so much information so quickly. That's why he's so dangerous.
Shaking the thought from my mind, Jin bumps my shoulder gently with his. "You okay?" He glances at my neck, seeing the thin line of dried blood. "I didn't have time to ask on the way here." His eyes remain on the injury.
After Jin called, I ran straight to my room and grabbed what I thought I needed. The time for cleaning injuries is after the kill, not before.
I grin. "I wasn't being careful and tripped." I close one eye and look through the scope into the room, which is still pitch black.
The cold nighty air brushes past us, causing my loose locks to fall away and follow the wind. I tuck them behind my ear.
"Tripped? You? Pfft, never." Jin rolls his eyes at the obvious lie. "I'm not stupid." I know he's not. I don't want him to know what happened, but I end up explaining. At least if anything does happen to me, he'll know who to blame.
"He better watch himself. If he does anything like that again, I'll show him what my blades can do. I'm just glad you're safe." He lays his head on my shoulder, staying like that for a few minutes with his eyes closed before whispering. "You can't leave me... you know that, right?"
I do know that. It's the same for him, too. Right now, if either of us lost one another, I don't know what we would do.
"I know, and I'm not planning on it. I wouldn't leave my family." Jin lifts his head, looking at me with sad eyes for a moment, but I'm unsure why.
"Family... you... you remind me so much of her." Before I can ask, he turns his head and wipes his eyes.
Despite our closeness, there are still past issues we don't know about. The past is something that's only brought up when necessary, and so far, it's something that hasn't been useful yet. So it stays behind with the heartbreak and the reasons why we've each gone down this road in life.
"She's inside," Jin raises the camera to his eye. I turn away and look into the scope.
Her skin is tanned, and her hair is dyed dark red. She walks around the room and then walks out of sight. I glance up from the scope and sigh, waiting for her to come back into view of the balcony.
"She walked away," Jin looks up from the camera with watery eyes. His nose and cheeks are red, and his voice is shaky.
"Jin—" I place my hand on his shoulder, but he shakes his head.
"I'm good, let's focus on the mission, okay?" Jin ignores my attempt and looks back through the camera.
I look through the scope once more. She's walking back into the living room. I place my finger on the trigger. I have a job to do now, and Jin can always tell me when he's ready.
