Rusty's eyes shot open as he jumped out of his bed, looking around in panic. His breath was erratic, still processing the shock of waking up. After calming himself, he took a deep breath, sitting on his bed and stretching his back. Another one of those dreams, he thought.
Recently, each night, he would dream of the forest. He was always alone, exploring the sheer darkness of the unknown woods, until he came face-to-face with a mysterious shadow. It was not a cat- their limbs where crooked, and in its face rested a horrid smile, with sharp, rotten teeth. However, he was never afraid. In his dreams, he felt powerful, as if that thing could never actually hurt him. Yet he never managed to fight the creature- he always woke up at that exact moment.
He changed his clothes, wearing a simple green shirt and Brown pants. He checked his phone- 3AM. Lucky it was Saturday, so he did not had to worry about school. His parents would be away for the weekend, and His sister, Princess, was in her boyfriend's house. Rusty clicked his tongue, as he slowly felt the boredom aready start to take hold of him. He slowly made his way to the bathroom to brush his teeth, still thinking of the series of dreams he has. Maybe . . . they meant something?
He walked to the kitchen, cooking a piece of venison on the fridge. He was not feeling that hungry, so only a small slice will do for now. He looked out of the window- His home was right next to the forest. The same forest of his dreams; every grownup always said: "Never enter the Forest, for not only there are wild creatures here; there are dangerous, territorial cats that would skin you alive." Despite that, his Father, Jake, never shared the same way of thinking. Every time rusty asked about the forest, he could see something in his eyes, something akin to fascination . . . and longing.
Without even knowing, rusty found himself leaning on the fence, staring at the deep woods. It screamed of mistery; even in broad daylight, the woods where always dark, as if he was staring in the eye of the abyss.
"Rusty!" He heard a familiar voice call, and turned to see his best friend, smudge, running towards him. He smiled, waving to him "Hey Smudge. Couldn't sleep, too?"
The tom was black and white, always with a goofy smile on his face. They where friends since Childhood "No. . . I was looking outside and I saw you there! Are . . . are you thinking of entering the forest?" he asks, with a look of concern on his eyes as he follows rusty's gaze, his tail lashing with nervousness
The red cat nods "They never let us enter it . . . but I just can't sit here and wonder all my life what is behind the woods!" he stares at Smudge "don't you just get tired? Every day we go to school, learn calculus, science, go back to our homes, study . . . I don't want to be stuck in a rotine that rots my being from inside out, at this rate I will become a mindless zombie, like father's coworkers!" he said, remembering how they reeked of sadness and lack of sleep.
"They just want to ready us for the future, rusty. I'm going to be a doctor!" smudge says, proudly "maybe you can be an archeologist in the future?" he comments, trying to get his friend's attention, but to no avail. Rusty's focus was still the forest. ". . . I hear the creatures there are bloodthirtsy." Smudge whispers, and Rusty's ears move. Looks like he finally got his friend's attention "Henry was in the forest once! And he said that he managed to hunt a big rabbit! But that's not all, when he was returning, he heard something! He said that it didn't sound like a cat, it was like something trying to speak with their neck torn open!" Smudge smiled as he saw rusty turn his head at him, eyes open in surprise "and he ran away when he heard someone screaming! He never went back there again!"
Rusty maintained his expression of surprise for a few seconds, before rolling his eyes "Oh, please! Henry is lazy, he might be from a family of hunters, but all he does is sometimes shoot the ducks when they are flying! He would never enter the forest!" he retorts. His fingers tapped against the fence in anticipation ". . . I'm going in there." He says, almost a whisper
Smudge's eyes shot open in alarm "didn't you hear what I just said? It is dangerous! Someone . . . something can get you!" he raises his voice, but quickly lowers it, not wanting to wake up his parents
Rusty chuckled, grabbing something from his back pocket. It was a knife "don't worry, I'm prepared." He winked to his friend.
Smudge looked at the sharp blade, and then back at him. His mouth opened to say something, then closing. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, realizing that there was nothing that could convince his friend "okay, I trust you . . . be careful, please." The black and white tom said, lowering his ears in worry.
Rusty smiled, nodding. He quickly jumped the fence. When his foot touched the ground, the feline felt as if a wave of energy had sudently ran trough his body. He did not knew what he would find- if those creatures are real, if the wild cats are as hostile as everyone said. . . but most importantly, he felt. . . good. He felt thrilled, as if this was a big step on something big! He took a deep breath, and took a step forward- However, he felt someone tugging on his hand. Turning back, he saw smudge, a nervous expression on his body, with the tail lashing. Rusty frowned "Smudge, i-" "I want to go with you!" Smudge retorted before the ginger cat could say anything, surprising him. He blinked a few seconds, and then smiled, nodding, happy that his friend would follow him "Do you have a weapon?" The tom blinked, looking around "u-uhmm. . ." after a few seconds, Smudge rushed to a stick on the ground, showing it to rusty "there!" he announces, with a proud voice, yet with a small hint of fear. Rusty chuckled, lightly slapping his forehead "Let's go, then!" he said, turning, as he slowly walked into the forest "Let's venture into the unknown."
They where walking for a few minutes now. The air was eery; as if they entered a different dimention-, the moon was bright in the sky, with many stars shining over them. The moonlight illuminates the fur of both felines, and a few fireflies illuminated between the trees. "This place is so awesome!" exclaimed, "I feel so alive! Can you feel the cold wind on your fur?"
"s-shush!" whispered smudge "t-there might be monsters nearby!" the young cat muttered, shaking from fear but still following the ginger cat
"Oh come on, Smudge! There's nothing there, don't be a scaredy cat!" Rusty teased, with a chuckle. Suddently, they stopped as a noise caugh their attention from a nearby bush. Both cats crouched to the ground, moving their ears towards the source. After a few minutes, they saw a deer appearing trough the leaves. Rusty and smudge's pupils' suddently constricted, becoming thin lines as they gazed at the deer, hunting instincts awakening inside them. They could probably hunt the deer. Cat hunters where quick, stealthy- with a quick blow to the neck, or by cutting one leg deep enough, they could immobilize it. Smudge, however, took a step back "I-I'm not sure rusty . . . there might be wild cats around and I don't know if they will like us hunting their prey . . ."
Rusty did not listen. He started slowly crawling towards the deer, one hand grabbing his knife and readying it. It was almost like his dream, he could feel it . . . a few more inches and he could-
Suddently, a branch broke from below him. Immediately the deer started to run, startled. Rusty got up, running after the deer with his knife readied in his right hand. The red cat's eyes where focused, he didn't even heard Smudge yelling behind him to slow down. After a few minutes of running, he felt like his chest was burning- he wasn't used to run so much like this. As the animal jumped in a bush, he rushed to follow, getting a few tears on his clothes, but he ignored the light pain as best as he could. When he left the bush, He was now in an open clearing, the deer must be close, it must be tired aready-
Rusty froze when he saw the scene in front of him. The deer was lying on the ground, with a big pool of Blood and guts around its body. Above the deer, there was a creature that rusty could only describe as a monster. The moonlight was shining on the beast, and rusty could see it: a slender, grey skin humanoid with four crooked arms. It was feasting on the corpse of the deceased critter.
Rusty gulped down, as he realized he was holding his breathing. He took deep breaths, taking a few steps back. Luckly, that thing did not notice him. He just need to walk a bit more steps and- "RUSTY!" there was a scream from behind him. It was Smudge. "RUSTY, DON'T LEAVE . . . me . . . behind. . ." his voice died down, probably because he also noticed the aberration in front of him. Unfortunately, said aberration also noticed Smudge's scream
The creature slowly stood up, and then turned to look at them. Rusty's blood froze. That smile . . . that bloody smile with those yellow, rotten teeth. . .
This time, he was afraid.
. . .
Shit.
