The trip back to the bus felt like a dream. Alex drove part of the way and Skye drove the rest as Red and his team guided them back. It was good they were willing to help or they'd be stuck after alex tore out the screen.
"We've had some weird calls in this job", Alex said. "This this has got to be the strangest one yet".
"I don't know, the ghost one was pretty strange".
Alex had no choice but to agree. They've seen a lot of strange things in this job so far. It would be impossible to pick the weirdest.
"But I know one thing", she yawned. "I cant wait until we're back in the warm".
The sleigh crashed into the walls and made a heavy landing but they were finally back in the cargo hold of the bus. Simmons came to check on them both and educated them on the signs of hypothermia but they assured her they were okay.
"Just keep on the lookout", she nodded.
Alex and Skye were only meant to sit down on the couch for a couple of minutes before getting ready for Christmas, but the next thing they knew, they were fast asleep.
The team walked in and sniggered as Alex's head rested on the back cushion and Skye's had dropped onto his shoulder.
Ward walked out of the room and Fitz pulled out his phone to take a picture.
"I am so holding this over alex", he joked.
"You forgot, alex has that picture of you asleep in the chair", simmons reminds him.
"Then we're even", he huffs.
"Someone wake them up. It's Christmas time", Coulson shouts as he walks out of the room.
"Alex, skye", Simmons says gently and shakes their shoulders. "Its time to wake up".
"How long has it been", Skye asks with one eye still closed.
"A few hours".
Alex looks outside to see its dark again and gets confused.
"What time is it?"
"Four pm", Fitz responds. "We thought we'd let you sleep whilst we dealt with everything else. The sleigh has been fixed, new screen and everything".
Skye started to apologise for delaying Christmas but they all assured her it was fine.
"How's Santa?" Alex asked.
"Ask him yourself", Simmons nodded to the door.
Santa walked in with the big read coat draped over his shoulders and sat on one of the chairs with a wince.
"Im healing", he nodded. "The magic will move it along faster and ill soon be out of here".
"Why did you crash? Was it the christmas spirit?" Simmons asked.
"We thought it was Folas", one of the elves said and quickly got shouted at by the others.
"What's a folas?" Skye asked.
Santa let out a sigh but nodded.
"Okay, I think you all deserve to know now that you've come across the Christmas spirit. A long time ago, Mrs Claus and I looked after a lost elf. His name was Folas. Something happened, and he started to turn dark. We don't know where he is now, he left. But we always fear he will be back".
"I didn't know there was drama at the North Pole", Skye whispered to Alex.
Santa slapped his knee and pulled the sac out from behind him.
"Alex, why don't you do the honours?"
He took the bag as everyone sat around them.
"Okay, who's first", he said as he reached in and brought out a present. "Fitz!"
He passed it to the man on the floor who ripped it open to see a percussion monkey.
"A monkey! Finally", he laughed.
"Yea, look after it, it's the only monkey you'll be getting".
"Ill ask for a real one next christmas", he whispers.
Coulson opens his present next and turns around a vintage captain America card.
"The last one got lost!" He exclaimed. "This is so going on the shelf".
Everyone laughed as Alex got another present out and handed it to skye.
"A laptop?" She questioned to Santa in disbelief. "This looks really expensive".
"Nonsense", he chuckled. "We have a very good elf in the tech department. I heard your last one exploded or something of the sort".
Alex and skye knew what happened. Or at least they thought they did. It almost fried the same day they met each other. That felt like a lifetime ago now.
"May next?" He said.
They all tried to look as she unwrapped a photo frame, but she wouldn't let them. It was a picture of her and her ex husband. She smiled at it and placed it face down.
"Alright who hasn't got one. Simmons?"
He handed her a fairly big but soft wrapped package.
It turned out to be a beautiful knitted blanket with blues and whites.
"Oh this is lovely", she breathed. "Its going to look great in my bunk".
Alex looked around the circle to see it was only him and ward left. And he felt a little awkward.
"Um, Nick?" He whispered. "Do adults still get presents if theyre on the naughty list".
He chuckled but pointed towards the bag.
"Normally they wouldn't receive a gift. But ive made an exception this year for Grant as he helped us".
Ward gave a glare at hearing his first name. But just as he said, a present appeared in the bag.
Just like May, they leaned over but Ward wouldn't let them see what was on the other side of the photograph.
"Your turn Alex", Skye smiled.
He reached in and picked up something heavy.
"What's this?" He said with interested.
The paper was ripped open and he pulled out his favourite book set from when he was a child.
"Woah the kingdom keepers series, I cant remember the last time I read these. They used to be my favourite. I'd read them with mom", he added quietly.
Skye squeezed his knee and everyone smiled at each other with their presents.
"Would you like to stay for dinner Nick?" Coulson asked.
"That would be lovely, thank you. But then I must be straight off. Im sure Mrs Claus wants to see me".
They shared a meal together and laughed over crappy christmas cracker jokes and wore paper hats. The meal was big enough to feed an elephant yet they finished it all and ended up spread around the main room as the tv was playing.
They watched it's a wonderful life from where they left off before all the crazy happened.
Alex sat back on the couch as Skye dozed on his shoulder. It was one of his favourite films. An old family tradition, one that he can share with his new family.
