Jessie yawned as she sat in the back seat of the car while Greg drove.
Greg followed Lawrence through the impossibly narrow streets of the Irish village, through a bit of the countryside, back into the edges of Dublin. There were turns every hundred feet or so, or at least it seemed like it as they drove, searching for roads that connected to other roads which went through, leading them to the place they needed to be in order to get to the hotel.
"I am certainly glad Lawrence agreed to show us the way back. I'm not sure we could have done this by ourselves in the dark," Susan remarked when they were part of the way there.
"Indeed, which is precisely the reason I asked him to guide us," Greg told her.
"Papa, if it is this hard just to find our way from the pub back to the hotel, how are we ever going to find the places we are looking for on our road trip?" Jessie asked.
"Do you mean the Stone Village?" Susan asked.
Jessie nodded.
"I'm not sure we will, Jessie. We can look around certainly, explore the villages and side roads as we come to them. We know the approximate location of the place we are looking for: someplace along the eastern coast of Ireland, probably to the south. It will be a place that was once a fishing village with a monastery nearby," Greg reminded her.
Jessie yawned again. "Okay. Maybe I will dream about it tonight. Maybe Melody can show me the way."
"I doubt she knows," Susan reminded her. "Even as Misty, she never left the Master's House the way you did to come here."
"I know," Jessie said in a guilty tone, remembering the story of how Misty died defending the strong hold so that others could get away. She fell quiet briefly while staring out the window before continuing to share what was on her mind. "Mama, when Melody came to talk to me last night, she looked different for a moment or two."
"When?" Susan asked curiously.
"When she was trying to talk to me about Ezra," Jessie told her.
"I noticed that too," Susan remarked.
"I suspect Melody knew Ezra best in her first life," Greg commented. "During her life as Misty, as Ezra said, while we were talking to him today. I suspect what you saw, Jessie, was the essence of her spirit, beyond what we know of her, from the time she was Melody."
Jessie thought about that. "Is that why she looked older? Because Melody never did get any older. I'm not sure Ezra will get older either. I mean, he's older now than Melody was when she went home, but he looks really sick."
"Yes, he does," Susan agreed. "I know it was important to Melody for us to meet him. It is a very human desire to want all those you love to meet and to know one another, and I know she loves us, just as she loves him. Because of that, I know she misses him while she is living with the Lord and Ezra is here."
"I think so too," Jessie agreed.
"You know, Papa and I have wondered for some time now if that is the reason the person we knew as Melody never lives very long when she is here. She is sent by the Lord to help people when He needs her to, but neither she nor her soulmate stay on Earth very long. We think that is why," Susan said.
"Do you think that is why Ezra thinks he's going home?" Jessie wondered.
"It may be," Greg told her. "It is difficult to tease out the ways and purposes of the Lord."
"I know," Jessie agreed. She frowned slightly. "It used to bother me when Melody came to talk to me in my sleep. But I am beginning to think she is trying to help us after all."
