The wind started to slowly pick up, dancing it's way through the trees as I made my way back home from work. The weather was getting chillier and the summer sunny days that seemed to linger on were starting to fade.
Soon the sweet smell of pumpkin spices and cinnamon will fill the air as everyone prepares to take on the new season. I honestly don't care for the cold weather.
Fall and Winter seasons were probably at the bottom of my list of things I enjoy and I am not just saying that because I live alone in a single one bedroom apartment with a broken heater.
I continued to shiver at the cool, icy air whistling around me once more. Eventually I stopped fighting the urge to keep my mouth shut and just let my teeth chatter away, letting the sound drown out the silence that filled the crisp evening.
It wasn't until I felt a lingering presence that made me stop in my tracks, even my teeth froze due to the new feeling creeping over me like a black cloud.
"Who's there?" My voice came out more shaky than strong like I intended, quickly scanning my surroundings but didn't see anyone. I picked up the pace as I started to race home, hoping to make it before the sun had completely set and was left with no lights.
I could see my building a few blocks away and with the feeling still following me I reached into my pocket, trying my best to increase my speed with every step as well as not dropping my keys. I was able to pull them out without a struggle, ready to unlock the door the moment I arrived.
Not even giving the elevator a second thought, telling myself I need the exercise anyways and headed straight for the stairs. Taking the steps by two, skipping every other one, I finally made it to the 3rd floor which is where my apartment is located.
With the dark cloud still hovering over my body I never slowed my pace and neither did my breathing as I continued my path down to my door, unlocking it in one swift motion.
Once inside I locked every lock I had, puffing my cheeks while slowly letting air escape through my lips I finally felt a little more at ease.
I cupped my hands around my mouth huffing out hot air as I tried to warm up. Turning my back to the door I allowed gravity to take control and let my body slid down until it was forcibly stopped by the hard floor.
I let nothing but the sound of my aching breaths and racing heart beats mix with the deepened silence that constantly takes over my apartment.
As I was slowly catching my breath yet still panting, I suddenly heard the swift noise of a slight breeze slip from under the door.
My eyes fell instantly on the creamy rectangular object that laid next to my leg. Everything in me was screaming not to pick up what looked to be a letter.
As I read my name written so elegantly across the envelope I could feel my breathing pick back up as the silence that was once setting over me quickly began to be replaced with the sound of my own heart pounding.
If it wasn't for the dark, scary feeling I had earlier when coming home I probably would of never have even thought twice about someone just slipping a note under my door.
But since I still had this bad feeling twirling around in my mind I couldn't help but overthink as my anxiety started to thrive with the fearful state that I am currently falling back into.
As the worst of the worse scenarios replayed on a loop in my head I couldn't help but only think of nothing but bad things playing out from a note being slipped under a door. It's always a bad sign in movies.
Or... well....
I paused for a moment. In romantic movies they have love letters. Maybe that's what this one is.
I shook my head at the stupid thought.
Come on Y/n don't be ignorant. You don't even have friends.
I was at least able to giggle to myself about my sad life, causally easing the tension a bit.
Because I mean come on, if you can't laugh at yourself and turn your pain into jokes how does anyone expect you to survive in this world, you know?
Anyways, my uplifted mood quickly vanished as I looked back down at the note, bringing myself back to reality. My body tensed up again as my spine began shaking to the core.
I honestly wanted nothing more than to just throw the damn note away but of course I couldn't... My curiosity ended up getting the best of me.
I leaned my head back against the door with the letter resting in my hands that were either shaking from the icy apartment or from the icky fear that was coursing through my veins.
In the end, I caved at the dispense of my own curiosity as it overpowered the fear.
