JongSuk stared at the calendar on his bedroom wall, today was his birthday, not that his birthday was anything to celebrate at least according to Eomma , she never acknowledged his birthday and hadn't since he was six years old. Which was also around the time that his father had left them. He stepped out of his room, and ran straight into Eomma's boyfriend, he ducked his head avoiding eye contact, Ahjussi (he refused to address him as Yang Abeoji stepfather)scared him he hated being in the same room as the man and tried to avoid the man as best as he could, but the apartment was small , so unless he was in his room or the bathroom or he just left the apartment completely it was hard. JongSuk wondered if the man had a job because ever since he had moved in with them, it didn't seem he worked, he was always home when JongSuk left for school and he was home when he returned in the evening. He demanded money from Eomma , saying it was for living expenses yet the landlady had been over several times because their rent was late , so JongSuk wondered what "living expenses " Ahjussi was spending the money on,Ahjussi even gave Eomma an allowance which was stupid because Eomma worked and made her money, but her new husband seemed controlling ,but Eomma didn't seem to care.
"Go make us breakfast before you head off to school, though I don't know why you're wasting time with that useless crap, you don't expect to go to university do you?" Ahjussi sneered , JongSuk didn't answer he never did, he just headed for the kitchen, but he was roughly grabbed by the shoulder and shoved against the wall, "What? Are you too good to answer me, Boy." Ahjussi slapped him as hard as he could, "You need to learn some respect." He said as he slapped JongSuk again. JongSuk bit his lip trying to keep from crying, his eyes stung as tears sprang to his eyes, he wasn't going to cry, not in front of this horrible man, he hated Eomma for bringing him into their lives, not that his life was better with Eomma, but he knew Eomma's moods (most of the time) Ahjussi was unpredictable and that made him scarier than Eomma .
"I-I'm s-sorry ":JongSuk stuttered bowing eyes to the ground. He waited until he heard Ahjussi leave and the door to Eomma's bedroom before he was able to breathe again, he hurried to the bathroom staring at himself in the mirror, pale face, red rimmed eyes and large handprint where Ahjussi had slapped him, his face still stung and he turned the water on as cold as it could get before splashing his face with water, he turned the water off and left the bathroom, heading for the kitchen to start cooking. As soon as he was finished he set everything on the table in the living room covering it , he glanced towards the closed door wondering if he should tell them that breakfast was ready, but he really didn't want to see Ahjussi again, so he decided against it, he put his shoes and coat on heading out the door.
Yoona seemed to be absent, she wasn't waiting for JongSuk when he arrived at school, she was usually waiting for him when he arrived and she wasn't in the classroom, he looked over at her desk, it was empty. He looked up as one of her friends entered the class and sat down at her desk pulling out her phone, she became engrossed in her phone, and talking with a few other girls that were nearby JongSuk hesitated before standing up and crossing the room to her desk. JongSuk cleared his throat trying to get his attention. Hyoyeon felt someone standing next to her, she turned around to see Yoona's project partner standing by her desk, she was surprised, the kid never spoke to anyone except Yoona ,but only because they had to, the boy hesitated and in a voice barely above a whisper asked "H-have you, I mean do you know why Yoona isn't here?" One of the girls grinned , "Do you like Yoona?" She asked teasingly . The boy's face reddened and he shook his head, "Aniyo! He said vehemently.
