Make Your Mark

The first step to finding out who your pony is is to check the bottom of their hooves. Here you should find an engraving proving that your pony was produced by Hasbro. It will also have "My Little Pony" on one of the hooves, which shows that it is indeed an official My Little Pony Product. This is also where the date your pony was made will be shown.

The Generations

My Little Pony is separated into seven different generations:

- Generation 1 -  (1982 - 1992)

- Generation 2  -  (1997 - 1999)

- Generation 3  - (2003 - 2009)

- Generation 3.5  - (2009 - 2010)

- Generation 4 -  (2010 - 2019)

- Generation 4.5 (2020 - 2021)

- Generation 5 (2021 -Present)

All generations have something special that sets them apart from the others. For example, G2 ponies have a rainbow symbol on the bottom of their back right hoof and small gems in their eyes. Early G3 ponies have a circular magnet with the My Little Pony logo on their front right hoof (This magnet was discontinued in 2007 with the arrival of the 25th Anniversary line, likely because it was considered a choking hazard).

Fake Friends

Fake ponies, nicknamed "Fakies" by the collecting community, are illegal imitations of the ponies we love produced by other companies without Hasbro's consent. Fakies are usually made using cheaper materials, meaning that they sell for much less on the second hand market. Some collectors, including myself, do collect fakies, but fakie collecting isn't for everyone. Some of the more popular fakie brands include Remco, Chap Mei, Lanard and my personal favourite, My lovely Horse (as an Irishman, this one always makes me laugh. If you know, you know).

Finding Nirvana

Don't worry boo, just because a pony isn't produced by Hasbro, doesn't always mean it's a fakie! Nirvana ponies are one of the most sought after ponies in the MLP community (and no, they have absolutely nothing to do with the band. Sorry to get your hopes up). Nirvana ponies usually have different colours to their more recognisable counterparts and were intended to the sold overseas. G1 ponies from the states were made in Hong Kong, whereas G1 Nirvana ponies are usually made elsewhere by other companies besides Hasbro. you can check where a pony was produced by looking at their hooves. One of the most popular kinds of Nirvana ponies are the ones sold in Japan by Takara, which stand out due to their unique "Kawaii" appearance.

Who Is She?
