The Fabric Softener Method
While you can use shampoo and conditioner in your pony's hair the same as you would with your own, I find this method to be the most effective. This is because shampoo and conditioner is intended to be used on human hair, where as fabric softener is more suitable for synthetics. It also helps to defrizz the hair and give it a nice scent when you're finished.
To prep the hair, apply some water to it and gently brush out the tangles with a doll brush or an unused human brush. Then, pour some softener into a small glass of water until it becomes cloudy. Put the pony's hair into the water and leave it to sit for a minute or two, being careful not to get the water close to the roots of the hair (this is to prevent the water getting trapped inside the body). Remove the hair from the water and give it another brush. Now you're ready to style it! Below are some of the ways I like to yassify my ponies.
Curlers
Despite being a fella with short hair, I own a whole bunch of curlers since these are a great way to style pony hair. You use them the same way as you would with your own hair, however, you may want to use smaller curlers depending on what your going for. My Star Flight is currently wearing two curlers in her mane, which separate the pink hair from the blue. I'm using a really thin curler in the front to imitate the forelock the G1 ponies had, which I think would be a nice choice for Star Flight.
If you find it hard to get the curler on the hair (I know I do), try wrapping a small piece of kitchen roll around the end of the pony's hair and use it to help you get started. This will give you a good flat area to put the curler on without having to worry about the hair going all over the place on you. to secure the curler in the place you want, use a piece of tape. I like to use washi tape or masking tape as it's easier to remove that regular tape, but regular tape works just as well.
Once you're happy with where the curlers are, keep the pony in an undisturbed environment overnight. In the morning, you can remove the curlers and arrange the hair how you'd like it and voila! Your pony is back to being their fabulous self!
Neck and Leg Roll
The neck and leg roll is probably the easiest hairstyle you can do on a pony. It's quick, easy and most importantly, makes your pony look cute as a button. For a neck roll, roll your pony's hair around their neck, wrap a piece of kitchen roll around it to keep it in place and secure with some tape. For the leg roll, you do the same thing, but wrap the tail around the pony's leg. Like with curlers, you'll want to leave the pony to sit overnight and remove the paper and tape in the morning. The end result will be a simple and adorable hairstyle reminiscent of the G1 ponies from the 80's!
Bells and Whistles
Now that your pony's had her spa day, it would be a nice idea to get her all dolled up! Dress the pony in any accessories and Pony Wear you think would suit them. I also like to use hair clips and ribbons. My G1 Ember (I haven't got a picture for you, sorry!) has a red, comically oversized bow in her tail. You might think that would look a little silly, but she does in fact look very sweet! Also, my G1 Sunlight (Also no picture) has a lovely paperclip necklace in the colours of the trans flag around her neck that I made once when I was bored. Get creative and use any old bits and pieces you find around the house.
