A helping hand

Working at the castle has gone smoothly, Cane and I have even become acquaintances. We share conversations whenever we see each other outside of work.
Also... I haven't heard any suspicious noises come from his room at bed time. Why should I care anyway? I don't, it's just that I don't want my nightly peace and quiet disturbed.
I've been here for over a month and I can feel the tension between the King, Cane, and his aunt. I can feel Cane's anger and frustration every-time she mentions finding a new wife, but this time it was different.

He didn't speak when we walked by each other.
His eyes grew more tired and I could see that he was feeling scattered. He went out drinking until the next morning, weaseling his way to the breakfast table, absent for lunch and dinner. This was the worst I've seen of Cane so far and honestly, it's a little scary. It has been going on for a week straight and truthfully he is ruining my nightly peace and quiet waking up the whole castle at 3 AM.

"CRASH"

I heard something or someone fall in the hallway of my room.
I've never jumped out of bed so quickly. I opened my door to see Cane snoring on the creaky old wooden floor.

"My goodness," I whispered.

I lightly tapped his face to wake him up.

"Good morning", he said with a grin.

How am I going to carry him to bed when he's twice my size.

"Good morning to you as well, I said sarcastically with a frown on my face.

His face saddened, "You're disappointed with me."

Seeing his face like that made me sad as well, but I am disappointed in him.

"I am, you don't have to keep your feelings inside and cope like this."

"I do, no one truly cares about how I feel."

"I do", I said in a whiny voice.

"Why??"

"Remember our conversation a month ago, you said you were going to be better and this is not better. If you feel heavy let me know so I can lend you a helping hand we're friends, remember? Now go to bed. I'll make chocolate chip pancakes tomorrow."

I held out my hand for him to take and I couldn't ignore the feeling, nor the feelings that ventured their way into my body.

"I'm sorry for waking you up, but I'm glad you were here to help, goodnight Ella."

"Goodnight Cane"
