"After Pandian's wedding, it is time we start searching groom for our Mayil uu. Seeing that she isn't going to college, there won't be any problem with studied also" one of the grandpas of our family says making me look up from my phone.
"You are right perippa (uncle), one of my loads will also weigh down" appa says making me frown.
"Enna sollra Mayilu ? (What do you say ?)" He asks looking at me.
"I don't want to get married" I say angrily.
"And why is that ?" Amma asks with sudden anger.
"Because i don't feel like getting married and moreover I'm just 20 years old" I say.
"Well, that is not what you told after completing your school. You told you wanted to get married after two years and this is the time" Amma says.
"That was different..." I drag.
"What different ? !" She asks angrily .
"Amma stop" I say trying to walk out.
"Indhadi nillu ! Engalukku oru badhil sollitu po. Unakku kalyanam yen viruppam illa ? (Stop ! Tell us an answer and then go. Why do you not want to get married ?)" She asks holding my hand.
I hesitate but anyways she won't leave me without an answer.
"Manasula oruthara vechuguttu innorutharukku epdi naan kalutha neeta mudiyum......? (How can I marry someone else when I already have someone in my heart ?)" I drag making everyone gasp.
"Aiyo aiyo !" Amma shouts, beating her chest as she starts crying.
This makes everyone in the house to come to the hall including all the cousins, uncle's, aunt's and grandparents.
"What happened Anni ?" One of my aunt asks as she comes near Amma.
"Ask her ! Did we raise her for this ? She is telling that she is loving someone and doesn't want to marry !" Amma says crying making everyone look at me with wide eyes.
"Ivala ? (Her ?)" Asks Karthi making me look at all the cousins who are more shocked than everyone else.
"Athai (aunt) please stop crying, let us hear her side also" Pandi maama says, taking the lead like always.
"Mayil, nee thairiyama enna nu sollu (you tell us what it is boldly)" he says patiently while looking at me as I stand there with glossy eyes.
"Maama that...." I drag.
"See I am here for you, I will take care of it. Just tell us" he says making me sigh.
Okay, this is it. I have no other way to go out.
"I have been liking him from my childhood. I don't know when this liking converted to love but it did. If i am to marry I will only marry him, otherwise I will stay like this all my life" i say.
Instantly my mother starts beating me making maama come in between us as my aunts pull her away.
"Athai please be patient" maama says but Amma keeps trying to beat me.
"ATHAI PLEASE !" he shouts making even me flinch as the hall goes dead silent.
"Does he know ?" He then turns around and asks me making me shake my head as no.
"Who is he ?" He asks making me shake my head no.
"Mayil *sighs*. See it is time to tell us the truth, we will not hurt you or him. Your priority is our priority. This issue has come this far. There is no turning back. Just tell us his name and who he is" he says making me look into his patient yet turmoiled eyes.
"Ma...ma..." I drag.
"Is he here ? Among us ?" He asks making me nod and everyone gasp.
Maama then comes near me, bends down to my ears making him warmth surround me as his breath hits my ears, a pleasure shiver runs down my spine.
"Karthi aaa ?" He asks making me instantly laugh as he backs off.
"No" i say, taking into account how everyone is glaring at me.
"Then who ?" He asks, searching the cousins section.
I sigh before raising my hand and pointing at him. Everyone gasps making him look at me before his mouth opens agape in shock.
"Naana ?" He gasps just as everyone else says "Pandi aaa ?" .
"Naana kattuna Pandi maama va dhaan kattuven (if i marry I will only marry Pandi maama)" i say making my father and mother sit down on the floor at the same time as maama stares at me with pure shock while Karthi almost laughs making the cousins nudge him while they digest what is going on.
"Ana avanukku sammandham pesi muduchaache ma. Innum moonu maasathula kalyanam vera vechurukome (but he is already betrothed and his marriage is in three months)" one of the grandparents tell.
"I know. That is why I am saying i don't want to get married. If I can't marry Pandi maama then i won't marry anyone else. My heart is for him and only for him" I say while looking directly into his eyes.
"Ei ! Loosa di nee ?! (Are you nuts?)" He scolds , looking shocked and confused.
"Un vayasu enna en vayasu enna ? (What is your age and what is mine ?) Moreover I am already engaged to Reshma" he says in a desperate manner.
"Love is love" i mutter only for him.
"Seruppu ! (My foot!)" He shouts making me almost smile at his cute face while he is angry.
"Look Mayil, you can't spoil your life like this. You are just a small girl. Athai, let us not force her. Just wait for another year maybe, she will definitely get over all this infatuation" he says.
"Maama, if you don't want me then tell that. Don't shame my love by saying it is infatuation !" I shout making everyone look at me with shock again.
"Ayo paithiyame ! (You idiot)" he says and sighs with so much tension.
And everybody just stands there for the next ten minutes, not knowing what to do or say.
"Mapla, you don't worry. You carry on with your marriage works. I will make sure she doesn't cause any problem to your wedding. I don't care if she doesn't marry, I just want your wedding to go peacefully. For everything you do for this family and Village, you deserve that" appa says, finally breaking the silence.
"Come !" My father says dragging me out of the hall.
The rest of the day goes by with him and amma scolding me and advicing me. I sleep by evening , tired by all the crying.
