Alex tries calling jo, who went with charlotte
to pittsburgh to find her birth mother, only to get her voicemail. he finds meredith in the hospitals new plant room. "what are you doing in here?"

"research, i needed a change of scenery. and you know, i have to say the plants are actually very soothing."

alex takes a seat in the chair beside her, "what are you working on?"

meredith holds up her laptop, to which alex asks "what is it?"

"ingestible, diagnostic device"

"ingestible?" alex questions.

"mhm. i mean, i think. i dunno, it came to me in a dream sort of, so." meredith shrugs. "how's charlie's trip going? did she meet her mom?"

alex sighs. "i don't know. i haven't talked to her. how's deluca?"

meredith dodges the question. "where'd you say she was going? pittsburgh?"

"yeah." alex ignores meredith's attempts at avoiding the subject of deluca. "is he still being weird? cause he's on my service today."

"why do you keep changing the subject?"

"why do you?" alex sighs. "charlie hasn't answered her phone, hasn't texted all day. i'm worried. jo hasn't been answering either."

"well, okay, so she's probably just gonna come home and tell you everything." meredith reasons.

"what about the italian?"

"big blowup with the dad. big. he does not want my input. so, i'm just trying to give him a minute."

alex sighs again, getting up from his chair. "boyfriends being weird and, uh, you're hiding out with plants." he heads toward the door.

"well if i was hiding out you wouldn't be able to find me."

Alex lets himself into the loft when he gets home from work, finding a small body curled up on the couch, "jo? charlie, you asleep?"

the laundry room door slides open and jo peeks her head out, "hey." she whispers.

"hey. how'd it go?" alex whispers, kissing his wife.

"not sure. she hasn't spoken since we left." jo whispers back, inviting alex into the laundry room where they continue talking in hushed whispers.
as soon as the door slides shut behind them, charlotte is seen awake on the couch, wiping away tears.

Jo finds alex in a stairwell at work the next day. "hey, did charlie come in with you?" she asks, "she was still sleeping when i had to leave and i didn't wanna wake her."

"no, said she wasn't feeling good," alex responds. "hey, what happened with her birth mom?"

"she wouldn't tell me. she got back in the car after meeting her and all she said was that she just wanted to come back."
