ch 21. ring of fire.

Jackson avery and maggie pierce sit on a gurney in the hospitals lobby when the whole building shakes. a loud bang is heard as the explosion caused by keith occurs. jackson rises from the gurney and begins walking away to investigate.

maggie sits up. "okay, so, either this is a drill or it's a real fire. and if it's a real fire then it probably has something to do with the guy, so i vote drill."

jackson changes direction. "despite that large boom you just heard? really?"

"all right, fine. it's the guy. the bad, escaped rapist guy." maggie gets off of the gurney as well, throwing her hands in the air out of exasperation. "why? why?"

jackson tries his key card. the doors click unlocked. "oh! the doors unlocked." he pushes it open.

"well, yeah, fire would override a lockdown."

"i gotta go find charlie."

"i'll go with you."

"no—no." jackson shakes his head. "you stay here, keep an eye out. maybe she'll make her way out. they'll get a triage set up outside soon, keep watch for her there okay?"

"okay. just be careful." maggie tells jackson as he heads through the double doors.

Upstairs, erin lies alone on the floor, pinned down by a microscope that landed on her leg during the explosion. "help!" she coughs, "help me! charlie?"

charlotte lay in the room across the hall. she comes to, hearing the child's pained, "help!"

"erin?" charlotte croaks.

"charlie?"

"erin! erin, where are you?" charlotte coughs, struggling to her feet but quickly toppling back down. burns cover her skin, and her clothing is littered with burn holes.

"don't do that, i thought you were dead!" erin cries out. "i thought you were gone!" after a moment of silence, erin cries out again. "charlie?"

"i'm here. hang on erin, i'll be right there." charlotte looks at the ring of fire surrounding her.

Dr. minnick jogs to catch up with dr webber. "just finished alerting all dispatchers to divert their traumas. do you need hands here?"

richard nods. "absolutely."

jackson rushes up. "hey, have you guys seen charlie anywhere?"

meredith approaches, overhearing jackson's question. "charlie? charlie's missing?"

"woah, woah, no one's seen charlie?" webber chimes in.

"yeah, i've been looking all over. we think she was last with the rapist."

meredith is shocked. "and just who's genius idea was it to let a sixteen year old be alone with a known rapist?"

"i've got to go. keep an eye out." jackson says before rushing back off.

"did you alert police about charlie?" minnick calls after him.
