Erin lay awake in bed, her heart pounding in her chest. Strange noises were coming from downstairs, but she couldn't tell what was causing them. She strained to hear every noise, her mind racing with possibilities.
Was it an intruder? Or is the house settling? She couldn't be sure.
Erin did not let fear take over. Despite the noise causing distress, she couldn't just lay there and wait. Instead, she had to confront whatever was causing it. Being brave was the only way forward for her.
With a deep breath, she got out of bed and tiptoed towards the door. She paused for a while, listening intently for any change in the noise. Hearing nothing, she slowly opened the door and crept down the stairs, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
Erin turned the doorknob and pushed the kitchen door open. The sparkling clean countertops, the neatly arranged utensils, and the freshly swept floor surprised her. She could have sworn that she had heard noises from the kitchen, but everything looked perfect. Suddenly, noises started coming from the living room. She turned the kitchen doorknob, but it would not budge. The door had locked from the outside.
"How can this be happening?!" thought Erin. She kept pushing and pulling the door in vain.
"Help!" shouted Erin in terror, "Help, I'm stuck down here! HELP!"
Upstairs...
"Anna! Anna! Wake up!" whispered Mr. Raven.
"What happened?" whined Mrs. Raven.
"Someone's shouting from the kitchen!" exclaimed Ethan.
"That's Erin!' shouted Anna, jumping from the bed.
Mr. and Mrs. Raven ran down the stairs toward the kitchen.
They opened the door, and Erin hugged them, relieved.
"Erin, what are you doing here?" asked Mrs. Raven.
"I heard noises coming from the kitchen and went there to check, and when I was trying to get out, the door got locked from outside," explained Erin, emphasizing 'from outside.'
"Maybe you closed the door too hard, accidentally locking the door," persuaded Mr. Raven.
"If I closed the door too hard, you guys would have heard it," added Erin angrily.
Understanding what Erin was implying, Ethan added,
"There's no such thing as ghosts," in a stern, low tone.
Noticing her father's tone, Erin walked up the stairs without another word.
Next day
"Hi!" squealed Ellie as usual.
"Hi, Ellie," said Erin in an exhausted tone.
"Didn't get enough sleep again?" asked Ellie.
"Yes and no," replied Erin, confusing Ellie.
Noticing Ellie's confusion, Erin narrated what had happened the previous night.
"Hey guys!" said a voice from behind them, startling them.
"Gosh! Griff!" shouted Erin, her hand on her chest.
"Sorry," said Griff, grinning, "what're you guys whispering about?"
Erin and Ellie narrated what had happened together. Griff looked as though he was over the moon.
"Epic!" he exclaimed after hearing the whole story, "So your dad didn't believe you?"
Erin shook her head.
"No adults believe this stuff," added Griff bitterly, and Ellie nodded.
Erin smiled as she thought that if she told her best friend, Ava, she would not believe her, but they did. They took their things and walked towards their class together.
