"Gemma!" I yelled as I went to hug her. "Serena hi." Gemma responded hugging me tightly. As I was hugging her I noticed that she looked thinner than usual. But I decided not to comment on it.
We talked until the bell rang and after that we parted ways. I was headed to the classroom when I remembered that I shared this class with them. My stupid brothers.
When I walked in I noticed that only one seat was available. It was the one behind my brothers' where their friend, Logan, was seated. Great, I have to start my day with three headaches.
In the classes I shared with my brothers I avoided sitting near them. And especially their friends, mainly Aaron. I don't know what it is about him that makes my skin crawl. I just have a bad feeling about him.
Dean and Cade have been more friendly with me these past few days but I still didn't trust them. They are probably trying to trick me and I wouldn't be falling for that.
They were watching me as I was walking towards them. They gave me a confused look before understanding what I was doing. Immediately Dean stood up facing me.
"Sit here." He pointed at his seat near Cade. Cade just nodded expecting me to sit. "No thanks." I said and made my way to the seat I originally planned to sit.
"Don't be difficult. I'm sure you don't want to sit next to Logan, do you?" Dean questioned raising an eyebrow. "Hey, what's wrong with me? I am sure we will have much fun." Logan said winking at me. Ew, gross.
Both Dean and Cade gave him a death stare. Seeing them this agitated Logan shut up and looked the other way.
"So what do you say sis?" Cade asked, both of them waiting for my answer. To be honest they had a point. I definitely didn't want to sit with one of their friends, especially Logan aka Aaron's cousin. So with a sigh I left my book to the desk and sat with Cade.
They gave me a triumphant grin before Dean left to take his seat. I hated that I let them win but it was better than sitting with Logan. So I am not as mad as I should have been.
But one thing was still unclear about this. Why didn't they want me to sit next to their friend. Were they possibly playing the overprotective brother's card? As soon as I thought this I scoffed. There is no way they would do this.
The rest of my other classes went well until it was lunch time. Me and Gemma were together at our table talking about a show we were watching when Aaron came and took a seat beside Gemma.
I was ready to tell him off when my eyes landed on Gemma. She looked irritated and yet she wasn't doing anything about it. Why?
"What are you doing here?" She asked with a hint of rudeness in her voice. He smirked at her and put his arm around her neck. "Can't I sit with my beautiful fiancée?"
My mouth dropped. Literally. Did he hit his head somewhere or what?
I looked at Gemma, silently pleading to tell me he was joking but she only nodded, confirming his words. My mouth dropped for a second time. What is happening?
"Don't make it so obvious." She removed his arm around her neck. "Nobody is supposed to know it yet." She whisper-yelled.
This was becoming more and more confusing. "Can someone tell me what the fuck is going on?" I said, waiting for an explanation.
I seriously don't know how a girl like Gemma would be soon married to a bloodsucking asshole like him. Even the word 'married' makes me cringe. There is something fishy about this. I have a feeling about it.
"It is an arranged marriage." Gemma started. "A way to reunite our families." Aaron finished. He looked like he was enjoying this while Gemma was definitely ready to vomit as she said those words.
"Did you have a choice in this?" I asked, my eyes fixated on Gemma. She gulped. She looked like she was thinking what to tell me.
"Yes. My parents wouldn't do something like this without my approval." She finally responded.
She looked convincing as she said that but a part of me just doesn't believe it. The way she acted around him didn't look like someone who was content with this situation.
"Are you sure?" I found myself asking one more time. I just need to make sure she's okay. She opened her mouth to respond when another voice was heard. "She said it was her choice." Aaron said angrily.
He definitely didn't like that I had doubts about their sudden engagement. Before I could talk Gemma interrupted me. "It is better if you go now. I don't want Jax to see us together."
So Jax doesn't know about this. This is getting weirder. Why wouldn't he know that his sister was engaged? I mean it is pretty clear that they have a strained relationship but nonetheless he's her brother and I know that deep down he cares about her too.
He clenched his jaw at what she said, looking slightly annoyed. But he ended up doing the reasonable choice and left. Now that we were alone it was time to investigate this.
"What is really happening?" I asked her. "I don't want to talk about this topic, Serena." She said tirelessly. "Just know that everything I said is true."
"I want to believe you, I really do but the way you looked at him it was definitely not love or anything similar to eat."
"Just drop it." She looked annoyed now. "I said I didn't want to talk about this."
I know I shouldn't but pressuring her might just make things worse so I drop the subject.
***
"Why are you so depressed?" Dean simply asked me. I glared at him.
"I'm not depressed you moron!" I say as throw a pillow at him.
"Okay, okay relax I was just asking."
I have been thinking about Gemma all day. Hence my 'depressing' mood. She didn't look happy at all and what's worse is that she doesn't want to confide in me.
I contemplated whether or not I should tell Jax but she said she doesn't want him to know so betraying her trust might make things worse.
Cade came to my side. He looked at me suspiciously. "Are you sure you're okay?" Is it written in my face that something is bothering me?
I thought about telling one of my brothers just to take the weight of my chest but I couldn't bring myself to do it. They would probably tell Jax.
"Yeah, I'm sure." If I would tell someone then that person would be Cade. He understands me better than anyone. Or he used to.
He squeezed my hand and looked away. Now we were seated in silence watching the boys play their stupid video games.
As mush as I hate to admit, it feels good to be part of this again. But then I remember what happened and I can't bring myself to forgive them.
That thought immediately breaks whatever trance I was on. I take my hand off of Cade's and stand up to leave. But then I stop, hearing a question that takes me by surprise.
"Is she okay?"
It was a simple question but that question made me stop in my tracks and turn around to face him. How dare he after all this time ask me this?
"I think that is none of your business anymore,is it?" I say venom dripping from my voice. "You lost the right to ask two years ago."
Then I start to go to my room when the door suddenly opens and Eli and Jason walk in. There is a third person hiding behind them.
Everyone is looking at them waiting to see who the third person is. "Everyone, look who decided to show up here." They say smiling.
The mysterious person starts to walk in. It takes time before his face is shown. The boys' face lights up when they see who it is and Martha nearly jumps from excitement.
I, on the other hand, stand there frozen as I feel my stomach dropping from his smile. He looks directly at me, a cruel smile on his face.
No one notices that. They are blind by the person they think they know so they don't try to look beneath the surface. Only I can see him for the real monster that he is.
"It is good to finally be back."
