"Damn, girl! You look too good!"
I chuckle as I come out of the bathroom. Emma follows me into my room with Kayla close behind. They both watch me put on my earrings as I do finishing touches on my attire for tonight.
"Where are you going, unnie?" Kayla says.
"It's an event that the hospital is hosting."
"It's similar to the one I hosted a few days ago," Emma says now as she looks through her phone. "It's to celebrate some sort of achievement the hospital had."
It's a small party to thank a new partner that the hospital has received funding for our students. Not everyone was invited, but most doctors from each department received an invitation to this party. I don't tend to go to these nice events since I prefer to look after my patients, but Cristina has convinced me this time.
Kayla's eyes sparkle as I turn back around for her to see my whole outfit. "You look beautiful, unnie."
I run a tender hand on her cheek as I step out with my high heels. My mother turns from the sink and gives me a wide smile. "Wow! You look beautiful!"
My father looks up from his plate and gives me a thumbs up. I give them both a kiss on the cheek and start out the door after I get my bag. "I'll be back late," I say. "Let me know if you guys need anything while I'm out."
"Honey!" my mother says from the kitchen. "Make sure to be open to gentlemen! If someone comes along the way, don't close the door on them too quickly, okay?!"
I roll my eyes at her words and nod. "Sure, Mom. Bye!"
"Wait!" I stop outside as Emma comes out to my car. She accommodates my brown hair and gives me a warm smile. I narrow my eyes at her odd attitude as her eyes shine with playfulness.
"You see," she says to me. "If you do end up escaping the party like you often do with Cristina and go out to eat, call me. I feel like getting some drinks tonight."
I click my tongue at her and playfully push her away. "How many times do I have to tell you to stop drinking? It's bad for your brain!"
"Unnie! I get a few drinks once a week! I'm not sinning!"
"Well guess what? I think I might actually stay late at the party this time," I say. "Make connections, right?" I get in the car and roll down the window as Emma leans on the window with a begging look. "Who knows? I might even meet the love of my life there."
"Like you even care! Bring me food at least!"
I wave my hand outside the window as I drive off with a small chuckle. I will get her something after the party. I have a good feeling about tonight.
Soon, my passenger princess does not stop talking throughout the whole ride to the convention center. She goes off about the same coffee shop man and how he appeared out of nowhere when she was crying by her office.
"Why were you crying?" I say now with furrowed brows.
She hesitates before saying, "I lost a patient."
"Oh no," I say. "I'm so sorry. Who was it?"
"The child who had leukemia. He started chemotherapy about a month ago and his body just gave out. It was the third time that week he had a code blue."
My heart feels for her sad story and I give her a sympathetic look. "I'm so sorry. Why didn't you call me?"
"I knew you were busy. I didn't want to bother. Plus, I just wanted to be alone."
I give her hand a soft squeeze before finding the large building. "Well, when you need someone during those times, I am here. No matter how busy I am."
"I know," she warmly says. "I'm okay now. It was just...I tried so hard, Leanne."
