Chapter 18 (EDITED)

TRIGGER WARNING: ABUSE OF ANTI-DEPRESSANTS AND EATING DISORDER

"You must be Vittoria, the senior associate?" A man in a navy blue suit asked her, as she was in her cubicle, typing away on her laptop.

"Yes, and you are?" She asked with a smile.

"Well, I'm Jose Blanch, the new partner here." The man introduced himself.

"Oh yes, lovely to meet you," she said as she got up and shook his hand.

"You're gorgeous," he said, "but also married." He stated after his eyes slipped to her huge diamond ring.

"yes, happily." Vittoria said curtly.

This man made her incredibly uncomfortable.

"What a shame." He said as he leaned on the door frame of her cubicle.

She frowned, "It really isn't." She stated with the bitchiest smile she could muster.

"Well I'm hoping to see more of you, since we'll be working on a few cases together in the coming weeks."

I hope I never see you again, loser. Vittoria thought.

Vittoria nodded, plastering a corporately cold smile, without another word, she sat down and got working again, as Jose walked away.

Vittoria got back home later that night, she felt her head spin.

She felt an overburdening cloud of heaviness and gloom, and she did not know why.

She went to the hidden drawer, and grabbed the bottle of anti depressants.

She took one. But then she took another.

This would help with the pain. She tried to reason.

When she sat down for dinner in the hollow but grant dining room, she felt an uneasy sense of dread.

She toyed with her food, before putting it away.

She was going to approach Heidi, or was it even worth her time and energy?

Her mom had called her again.

In fact, more than once.

She saw her mom's texts.

Call me back asap.

I hope Nicholas is not mad at me.

I was only trying to look out for the two of you.

 She did not text back.

Was this worth it?

Was this marriage really worth it?

Suddenly there was a sharp pain in her head. She felt like she was dragging her feet.

When was the last time she had eaten a full meal?

Somehow, she made it to her bedroom.

She lay down, as the pounding in her head continued.

Much too soon, darkness consumed her.

Gstaad, Switzerland

In the late evening, in a quiet yet luxurious bar, a man sat on one of the bar stools.

It appeared he waiting for someone.

He was around 60, but the worry marring his face made him appear older.

He drank his whisky and did not look merry when he glanced at the festive lights or the happy groups of people huddled around the rest of the bar.

The door of the bar chimed, as a new customer entered.

The man who drank whisky looked up, directly at this new customer.

Recognition flashed.

"I knew I would find you here." This new entrant spoke.

"I don't want to know how."

The entrant was unfazed by this man's wariness. "That doesn't concern us now, does it? What does concern us is a very interesting chance meeting I had with one of your board directors, Michel." The entrant continued, "He had very interesting things to say about how you've been handling the company, and taking it down."

The man gritted his teeth, "you've no idea what's been going down."

"I do, Danis, I happened to check some files, and imagine my astonishment to find out that Michel was correct."

"Those were internal files, which were not supposed to go out of the board."

The entrant smirked. "I'm willing to save you a lot of embarrassment. To put it very directly, I really couldn't care less about you, but I do care a lot about my wife, and I can't let you go to jail for fraud of the highest order, now can I, my dear father-in-law?"

The man stayed quiet for a moment. "you are a power hungry devil, Nickolas, had I known, your true colours, I would've never allowed my daughter to get married to you."

Nickolas' eyes darkened, and an evil smile donned his face. "you've no idea the lengths I am willing to go to have and keep your daughter with me."

Vittoria's father, Danis, looked directly into Nickolas' eyes and he saw it. The madness and darkness.

"so that's it, you are going to save me?"

"No, I'm going to save Vittoria the stress of knowing her father is a fraud. I am not going to let you fucking worry her."
