Divine Intervention

My heels slam down one after another on the cold pavement as I make my way through the streets of London. It's winter, there are fewer people lingering outside bars, more people opting to take the tube. As a result, I've decided to walk to my destination tonight rather than take any form of pubic transport. Plus it's rush hour, I don't want to be penned into a tiny metal shuttle, pressed against people with a days worth of BO radiating off them.

In fact, it's imperative that I do not smell like BO once I reach my destination because I am going on a date. Not voluntarily, no, I'm being forced. I'm being forced by my friend Utahime and there's nothing I can do about it. As I stop momentarily at a crossing, I puff the air out of my cheeks only to see it spiral away in an icy mist. Now that I come to think of it, my fingers are getting really cold... I've always had bad circulation, maybe I should have taken the tube instead.

Never mind, it's too late now. I press my hands deep into my pockets and harden my resolve, I'm only a few minutes from the restaurant where I'm supposed to be meeting this mystery man. Well, I say mystery because the only thing I know about him is his name and profession: Gojo Satoru... damn, I forgot his job. It's something finance related I think. That's all I could drag out of Utahime before she refused to tell me anything more.

He doesn't sound my type, which thankfully makes things easier for me to just go on this date, only to never talk to him again and successfully get Utahime off my back about my love life. She thinks I only care about work. She's right.

Suddenly I feel my phone vibrating against my hand in my pocket, causing me to drag it out just as the lights to the crossing turn green. I pace forwards, staring at the screen only to find Utahime herself calling me. I press the accept button before placing the phone to my ear and peering around to try and find my bearings.

"Are you there yet?" I hear Utahime ask and I let out a short laugh in response.

"Checking up on me already? And no, I'm not there yet." I respond as I push through a gaggle of people blocking the pavement.

"Okay..." She begins warily. "You're still going to show, right?"

"Providing theres not a moment of divine intervention, yes, I will show." I tell her and I hear a scoff from the other end of the phone.

"You should be more grateful, most women would die to go on a date with Gojo Satoru." She says, announcing his name as if she's his biggest fan.

"Should I really now?" I say as I continue to scan my surroundings, looking for my destination. I pass my phone to my left hand and press it to my other ear, stuffing my right hand in my pocket considering it's almost gone completely numb by now. "Well in that case I better hang up, I'm almost there and wouldn't want to keep the great Gojo Satoru waiting." I say with a faux enthusiasm as I end the call before Utahime can chastise me. She can do that after this date goes terribly.

My eyes finally find the restaurant on the other side of the road, it's an italian restaurant, often used for corporate outings or overpriced dates (this occasion just happens to be the latter). I won't make him pay though, I'll offer to split. After all, I don't see myself ever meeting up with this man again to pay him back in any form.

I once again stop at a crossing and wait patiently for the light to turn green. My gaze remains fixed on the restaurant in front of me and I squint through the window from far away to try and discern a single face which may be my date. I feel my heart begin to beat quicker as I do so, am I really feeling nervous right now? What am I, a 13 year old girl? I slow my breathing and become aware of my cloudy exhales dissipating into the air after leaving my lungs.

Finally the light changes, and I step forwards, still focusing on my heart rate and attempting to slow it down.

Then it hits me.
