KATE BROWN
Dear Kate,
North Denver, Colorado 1978. A working-class, kind of like a blue-collar neighborhood, half-Mexican, half-white. There is a lot of violence here. Everybody gets whipped by their parents, there is fighting on the way to school, on the way home from school, at school.
I really can't wait for you to move here though, it'll be great to have some family here that isn't just Finney, Daddy and I. When you get here, school has already begun, but I'll still show you around, and help you to classes.
I can't believe that we'll be neighbors, it's like Jesus planned this for us.
I probably won't be sending much letters because I'm really running out on postcard stamps and Daddy is getting mad at me because we have to buy them.
Safe travels!
Love,
-Gwenny Blake.

I smile when I read the letter my second cousin Gwen writes to me. I'm Kate Brown, 13 years old. I am moving to North Denver soon because of how dangerous it is where I live now. I currently live in Bushwick, a neighborhood in New York.
My family and I are moving because of the amount of crimes and terrorist attacks there are. We also just found a really nice house in North Denver, which is closer to some relatives.
By relatives, I mean the Blake family. My mother and their mother were cousins, which make us second cousins. Gwen is only 10 years old, Finney is 13, the same age as me. Their mother committed suicide 4 years ago and it hit them really hard.
I'm an only child and I'm super excited to move to Denver because I get to see and become closer with Gwen and Finney. Although I will miss my friends very much, this is a new chapter in my life and I think it'll be really good.
"Kate! Have you packed the things in your room yet!?" My mother yells from downstairs, "Yes I have!" I told her. I grab a few boxes I have filled up with some things from my room, the rest of my things like my bed or vanity will be in a moving trailer.
I walk downstairs with a few of my boxes, "Where do I put them?" I ask my mom, "In the car." she tells me.

October 5th 1978
It's been a week of packing and preparing to move and today is the day. We finally move to Denver!
My family and I woke up really early because we are driving for at least a whole 24 hours. I got changed, and had one last look at our house. I've lived here my whole life, but now it's time for a new chapter.
I packed a small bag with Cassette tapes and batteries for my walkman. I sit in the car, til we finally start moving. "Are you excited Kate?" My mother asks me, "Yeah, I can't wait to see Gwen" I tell her.
"It'll be an adventure for the whole family..." My mother smiles. "You're going to love Denver, all those snow capped mountains, the fresh air, the beautiful hikes... I can't believe we were able to transfer my job there as well."
"You'll be able to see those mountains from just about anywhere. It's a truly gorgeous town. And it's not just about the scenery. They've got a great scene there. We're going to have to get you a snowboard, Kate." My Father tells me.
"We can see mountains from our house?" I ask them, "You sure can, honey. They're all around Denver. You'll love seeing the snow-capped mountains on your way to school every day... And just look at the weather. It's going to be much warmer than that bitter New York wind all the time... You'll see, you're going to have so much fun." my mother replies.
