You and Jethro have a fight.
-
Jethro had been driving you up the wall lately. He was barely home and when he was he was always in the basement. It's like you lived alone all over again. He didn't go bed until 1-2am and was up and gone before 6. You only saw him when he came out to get food or made his way from the front door to the basement after work. He wouldn't talk to you and when he did it was cold and sharp, like he hated you. He was pushing you away and you didn't know why.
Today you decided to bring him lunch in hopes to finally get to talk to him. This could go one of two ways, either yous would make up and be happy again or, it would end in a fight which could inevitably end your relationship. As you entered the bullpen you were met with Dinozzo and Ziva squabbling over a case, McGee had his head in his computer and Abby was standing at Jethro's desk talking to him about a case. Jethro was typing on his computer but you could tell he was listening to Abby. As you approached closer, Abby stopped her conversation, turning to you and wrapping you in a hug.
"It's been ages since I last saw you, I missed you!" She says, tightening the hug.
"Yea I missed you too Abby" You replied, wrapping your arms around her. Jethro didn't even look up at you. Abby finally let you go, mentioning something about having tests in her lab to do and left. You placed the plastic bag on Jethro's desk, hoping that he would just look at you. Nothing. You stood there feeling like a complete idiot until you managed to finally get some words out.
"Can I talk to you?" His eyes never left his computer, still typing away.
"Why can't you talk to me at home? Why do you have to come to my work?" He spits out. His harsh tone catches the attention of Tony and Ziva who immediately go quiet, turning back and working on their cases in silence.
"Because I never see you at home, I've barely seen you these last few weeks and I want to know why your acting like this" You say, still looking at him.
"Acting like what? Theres nothing wrong with me! Why can't you just leave me alone?" He says loudly, finally turning to look at you. His words hurt you.
"Because I love you and I'm worried about you and for whatever reason your pushing me away and won't tell me why! Look I'm sorry if I've done something wrong but the fact that you cant even look at me let alone talk to me about it is ridiculous! You're acting like a child!" You reply, tears swelling in your eyes. "I won't be home when you get back, don't bother ringing me, I wont answer you" You add before turning and walking out.
Ziva followed you to the elevator, knowing you would need someone to talk to right now. As soon as the doors closed you burst into tears. Ziva stops the elevator and wraps you in a much needed hug.
"It's ok" You hear her whisper to you. She eventually lets go of you as you slump against the wall.
"I just want him to love me again" You cry out, head in your hands.
"Oh hunny, he does love you he's just struggling to show it" She says as she sits down next to you.
"He hates me, and I just embarrassed him in front of everyone he works with. I'm the worst person for him" You start to cry harder.
"He doesn't hate you, you make him happy. He's been so much better to work with ever since he met you, you make his life worth living. He isn't so quick to run into a house full of shooters anymore because he wants to come home to you. So sure, he's going through a rough patch right now but trust me, once the light starts to shine on the other side, he will be running back to you with open arms" She takes your hand. "Just give him time, thats all he needs" You really did need to hear that.
"Thank you Ziva, I really needed that" You smile for what feels like the first time in weeks. She gets up off the floor and offers you a hand. You get up, pulling her into a final hug before starting the elevator again.*
Jethro arrives home later that night to an empty house. Much to your word, you weren't home. He pulls out his phone and dials your number, it rings through with no answer. He calls again, and again. No response. You were keeping your word. He'd thought you were joking, but now in the late hours of the night he was worried about you. He quickly calls Ducky, explaining the situation and asking him to come over to help find you. Ducky arrives 15 minutes later to a frantic Jethro, 27 missed calls and 42 unread messages.
"Can you ring her on your phone? She said she wouldn't answer me but maybe she will answer you" He cries to Ducky. He hadn't been like this since Shannon and Kelly died.
A phone call from Ducky showed up on your phone. You knew it was from Jethro but part of you felt bad for him. You answered, the line silent for a moment before you spoke.
"Hello Ducky, I'm guessing Jethro convinced you to call me?" Jethro's heart jumped at hearing his name.
"Well yes something like that, can I ask where you are? Are you safe?" Ducky seems genuinely concerned. You knew Jethro was listening, part of you wondered if he'd been crying as much as you had.
"I'm fine Ducky, I know Jethro is there, can I talk to him quickly?" You decided to take the risk.
"Of course" You hear Ducky reply, the phone was then passed over to who you could only guess was Jethro.
"Baby please come home, I'm so so sorry for how I treated you, I love you. I'll talk to you from now on, if something is bothering me you will know about it. Just please, please come home" You can hear the desperation in his voice. It broke your heart hearing him, he sounded so... broken.
"You know I can't do that..." You reply quietly, just enough for him to hear you. You know he's crying.
"Please" He whispers. Part of you wants to give in and go home to him but another part of you is telling you that its a bad idea. Is it really worth wreaking the only good thing you have in your life over a few fights?
"I'll be there in 15 minutes" You say softly. "Can I talk to Ducky again please?"
"Y-yes of course" Jethro responds, sounding a lot better. He hands the phone over to Ducky who waits for what you want to say.
"Look after him for me please" You say. "We both know he isn't as strong as he puts out to be, deep down he just wants to be loved and cared for"
"Of course, I'll see you in 15 minutes" Ducky replies before the call ends.*
Pulling back into the driveway of your shared house caused a whole new wash of emotions to hit you. You jiggle your keys in the door and stand in the doorway of the lounge room. Jethro is sitting on the couch, his head in his hands mumbling something about how bad of a boyfriend he is. Ducky is sitting on a chair looking up at you. He gives you a smile which you weakly return.
"Hunny I'm home" You joke softly. Jethro's eyes shot up to look at you. And suddenly he's standing up from the couch and making his way over to you, wrapping you in the tightest hug he's ever given you.
"I thought I'd lost you" You hear him sob.
"I'm so sorry" You reply, looking over at Ducky who gives you a simple nod. Ducky stands up and grabs his things off the table, heading towards the door.
"I'll leave you both to it, you have a lot to talk about" He says.
"Thank you Ducky, for everything" You say, your arms still wrapped tightly around Jethro.
"I owe you Duck" Jethro adds, not releasing his grip on you.
"Goodnight guys" Ducky says before leaving.
It felt like an eternity before Jethro finally released his grip on you, pulling back to look you in the eyes.
"I'm so sorry for how I treated you these last few weeks, I don't deserve you" He says, his eyes red and puffy with how much crying he had done in the last few hours.
"And I'm sorry for embarrassing you in front of everyone you work with, you were right, I should have waited till you got home" You reply, a wave of embarrassment washing over you as you remember calling him a child in front of his co-workers.
"Embarrassing me in front of everyone is the least of my worries, it took you yelling at me in front of everyone for me to realise how shit of a boyfriend I have been to you. You should never have to wait for me to come home just to talk to me, you can always call me, or show up to my work just like today. And thank you for the lunch, I didn't really deserve it after the way I spoke to you. I'm so sorry" The sorrow in his eyes told you that he meant every word.
"I know you are" You say softly, your fingers tracing the sides of his face. He smiles down at you before pulling you into another hug, pressing his lips to your head. "Come on, lets go to bed, we can talk more about this tomorrow" You add, pulling back from him and giving him a quick kiss before pulling him towards the stairs.
"Let me turn off the lights first sweetheart" He laughs softly, letting go of you to quickly turn off all the lights before picking you up and walking to your bedroom. He gently places you on the edge of bed so you can get changed. After what feels like an eternity, you finally slip under the covers. Jethro pulls you to his chest, kissing your head again. You felt so safe in his arms, so loved.
"I missed this, being able to curl up into you after a bad day" You say, closing your eyes.
"I missed this as well" Jethro responds, pulling you even closer.
"I love you Jethro" You whisper, just loud enough for him to hear.
"I love you too sweetheart" He whispers back. Eventually the state of sleep overcomes you as you prepare for the long talk tomorrow.
