I will use this "**" to warn of what's to come.

"With girls, they're gonna scratch and, most specifically, try to get to your hair. So, before you start getting into it, put your hair up in a...what do you call it?"
"A bun," Elena answered.
"A bun. It'll be hard for them to grab but the minute you see them try to grab it, it'll give you a window to grab onto them and you just go crazy on them, but don't get sloppy. One thing I notice with girls at school is they always just go swinging their arms like a helicopter. Don't do that, but if they do that to you step back and keep your eye on them. Only time I've seen it's affective is when you grab a hold on them and with the other arm you swing on them."
Antonio, Elena's older brother, was teaching Elena how to fight. He was instructing her how to fight with girls at school, and also wanted to show her how men do it so she can take notes.
"Now, for when men fight, these fists are closed tight. Fingers fold down and your thumb over them," Antonio instructed, showing his left hand doing as he said.
Elena followed with her right hand.
"Do that to both hands, and bring them up like this," He instructed, bringing his hands up guarding his face. "And bring them close, if you have space from your face: this is what'll happen."
Because Elena already had space from her face, Antonio pushed her hands causing them to hit her in the face, "Ow, Tony."
"That's what'll happen. But if you keep them to your forehead, that won't happen."
Elena put her fists to her forehead, in which Antonio pushed her hands again and this time there was no hitting herself in the face.
"See? Now, you just keep protecting the money maker. So, when you punch, you're gonna punch straight out, keeping the fist closed."
Antonio would continue training Elena, outside in their backyard. Their parents would be watching them from their kitchen, Lucia always worried that Elena would get targeted for her gift but couldn't help but feel some sort of comfort in the fact that she is learning to defend herself. Elena's father, Arturo, was proud of his oldest son for teaching his only daughter to fight and defend herself. And proud of his daughter for absorbing everything Antonio was teaching her.
From there on, Elena would go on to win fights.
And also lose some.

Elena moved to get to her office phone until—
"Nuh-uh-uh," Isaac interrupted Elena, walking inside the office, and lightly closing the door behind him. "I just wanna chat."
"I would feel more comfortable with the door open," Elena firmly said, her breathing quickening.
"It will be quick," Isaac said, slowly making his way to a seat in front of Elena. "I just wanted to talk about what happened on Friday. And also, the fact that there was police standing at my front door yesterday. Let's just talk."
"I have nothing to say—"
"Oh really? Because to me it seems you had a lot to say to the police. Why did you involve the police, Elena? Do you have any idea what that will do to me?" Isaac pressed on.
Elena remained quiet, looking away from Isaac because of how intense his stare was on her. She eyed her phone that she still had in her hand, wanting to call the police. She felt like every sudden move will come with consequences.
