Four months later.....

I took my coat and practically ran out of the hospital with Ferdinand shouting after me to be careful on the road so I don't become a patient myself.

I was in a rush, my mom called a few minutes ago that dad will be getting off work earlier than usual. I thought he would be home late in the evening like he always does. That way, I would have enough time to bake him a birthday cake like I had planned.

Even though he told me he had taken that boxing ticket I gave him as an early birthday gift so I don't need to waste money on getting him any birthday gift, I refused.

I mean come on, it has been four months since they went to watch the live boxing match. He really enjoyed it, yes, but there was no way I'm considering that his birthday gift. I didn't even get the tickets with my own money.

I hailed a cab hastily and soon, I was on my way home. Texting my mom to help me prepare all the ingredients so as to save time.

“I don't think that much baking powder is supposed to be added to three cups of flower, darling.” I heard mom's sudden voice behind me and yelped in shock.

“At least let me finish this cake before you give me a heart attack, mom.” I told her after sighing heavily.

“Well, I hope your dad don't get a heart attack from eating this cake.”

“Don't jinx. There's nothing wrong, I'm following the recipe.” I told her.

“I could just give you my own recipe, you know?”

“Moooom! Your cake is probably the most delicious cake I will ever eat but I told you, I want something different. If I use your recipe, it would look and taste like your cake instead of mine.” I replied stubbornly.

“Oh trust me. Even if I talk you through the whole process, there's no way you could make a cake that tastes as good as mine. There is just so much a first-time baker could do, carry on my dear.” She patted my back with a fake pout on her lips before walking gingerly to the living room.

“Thanks for the encouragement, mom.” I rolled my eyes.

I looked inside the bowl of flour in front of me, I couldn't remember if I had added the last teaspoon of baking powder before mom's intrusion.

I added another teaspoon anyways and continue measuring the other ingredients.

I greased the pan, poured the cake mixture in and after doing all the necessary things, I placed the pan into the preheated oven and set the timer.

I transported all the used bowls and materials into the sink for washing. I was almost done when my phone rang.

Before I could finish rinsing my hands and drying it, the ringing had stopped.

I checked to see the person who just called me was one of my coworkers who gave me the recipe I'm using right now. I called her back and she answered almost immediately.

“So, how's it going?” She asked with interest.

“Just placed it in the oven. My mom seems to think the baking powder’s too much, are you sure the recipe is correct?” I asked wearily.

My mom is a professional baker and if she could think that the baking powder is too much, I don't think I should doubt it.

However,  everyone has their own different  recipes so I believed she said that putting into consideration her own recipe.
