INI.

Dad knew his wife was wrong but he wasn’t a fan of arguments within the family and that’s why he was trying to get me to keep quiet. But the truth is, we need to let mom know that she’s in the wrong or else she’s going to carry on with her current mindset and attitude.

“No dad. You need to let her know when she’s wrong. You are not the only one going through stuff, mom. And about the financial issue you are trying to fault me on, I’m also contributing, am I not? I transferred all my savings for this year rent and I never complained, did I?”

“Would you look at that? So just because you empty your savings, that means you’ve done something no one has ever done? Should we get on our knees and thank you, Ini?” Mom asked mockingly.

“You are not even getting the point!” I threw my hands up in frustration.

“Your mates are having a stable job, earning well and taking on all their parent’s expenses and here you are complaining just because you paid the rent once?” Mom states.

“My mates are doing that! My mates are doing this! I don’t care mom. This is not the first time you will be taunting me with that statement but guess what? I am not my mates! I am me, Ini!” I slapped my hand on my chest multiple times. “And I do my own thing, I don’t compare myself to others. You’ve been like this ever since I told you that Kiki now has her own fashion company and she’s planning on getting her own apartment. I told you about her because I was happy for her, not so that you could compare me to her, mom. I AM NOT KIKI!” I yelled and I couldn’t help it, a tear rolled down my face.

I was honestly heartbroken. She knows how hard I had worked to get my job even though it wasn’t paying well but I chose not to give up because it was a job I loved and it was my dream.

She also knows about my insecurities about the fact that I still wasn’t financially capable of living on my own like most of my age-mates are but she went there anyways.

My mom was silent and a look of sadness was plastered on her face but I wasn’t done, I needed to get this out.

“I’m not the only twenty six year old living with my parents, there are people in their forties still living under their parent’s roof even after getting married. I couldn’t care less about what my mates are doing. I would like you to know that some of my mates are dead too mom! I’m still alive and I’m thankful.” I paused to sniff.

“I know you don’t like my job just because I don’t make much from it but I had told you the hospital was going through a phase and it would improve and I also told you I’m working hard to work my way up. I love my job and you know that. W-when I got that job, I-I honestly thought that you would be proud.” My voice broke.

I turned and walked hastily into my room, locking the door behind me before sliding down the door, I broke down in tears, it’s been a while.

The sound of my ringtone jerked me awake and I realized that I had dozed off against the door, my phone had fallen to the floor. My muscles ached as I stretched out my legs and reached for my phone.

It was Praise calling me. I groaned and rolled my eyes before picking up.

“What?” I answered.

“Woah! Calm down.”

“What do you want? Wait, are you still not at home?” I removed my phone from my ear to look at the time.
