"But dad!" I heard my little brother, Declan, exclaim. I knew something was going on but I didn't have much interest in what it was. Declan was only 7 but he was constantly arguing with my parents when he didn't get his way.
"Declan, stop this right now!" I heard my mom exclaim. After a few more exchanges, I hear little foot steps ascending the stairs, followed by the sound of a slamming door. He must be pissed. I get up as I go downstairs to the kitchen where my parents are.
"Hey, what happened with little man?" I ask as I go to the fridge to get a bottle of water. I turn towards them and my dad shakes his head.
"Cole, I don't even know anymore. He got upset because I've been in the studio so much. He probably thinks I'm abandoning him. I'm a terrible father." He says quietly as he rests his head in his hands. My mom reaches out across the table and rubs his arms.
"Patrick don't you dare say that! You are an amazing father to these kids!" She says sternly. She gets touchy about this topic since it is true, my dad is always extremely busy with recording and touring and promoting and filming and the list goes on and on. I take a seat in the chair next to my dad and wrap my arms around him.
"Dad, stop. You are the best father Declan and I could ask for. Don't kick yourself. You're always there for us. He's just upset, give the little guy time." My father looks up at me and smiles.
"Thanks, baby," he says. He looks at my mom and shrugs. Then, as if a lightbulb went off in his head, my father's expression perked up a bit. "Colette, can you please excuse us for a second?" He asks me. I nod and get up, returning back to my room as my parents discuss whatever "genius" plan my father came up with this time.
I came downstairs ready for school as I placed my backpack and shoes on the table.
"Hey!" My mom said from the stove, "Cole, shoes off the table!" I rolled my eyes as I placed my shoes on the floor.
"Yes, mother." I said as I went over to kiss her on the cheek. "Need help with breakfast?" I asked. She shook her head.
"I think I can handle it today. Can you please go help Declan get ready for school? He's still mad at you father, and plus he's up in the studio making some calls." I nodded my head and headed towards the stairs.
"Sure, mama." I said as I went upstairs to my brother's room, knocking on the door before I walked in. "Hey, little man," I said as I saw him laying face down on his bed. His strawberry blonde hair was all over the place and he wasn't wearing a shirt. I chuckled a little as he sat up and threw a pillow at me.
"Leave me alone, Cole!" He said, grumpily.
"Hey, don't start attacking me just because you're mad at dad." I said as I went to his dresser to get him a plaid shirt and a pair of jeans. I threw them at him and told him to put them on as I went to his closet and pulled out his favorite pair of black converses. I handed him a pair of socks and waited as he finished tying his shoes. He was finally ready just as my mom called up that breakfast was ready, too. Declan ran out of his room and hurled down the stairs. I laughed as I grabbed his backpack off the floor, putting a stray notebook into it and brought it downstairs with me. I placed it on the table next to mine as I took my seat at the head of the table where dad usually sits. My mom served us our food before going to the bottom of the stairs.
"Patrick!" She yelled up. "Breakfast. Downstairs. Now." Within seconds, I heard my dad's footsteps moving around upstairs. He opened the door to his office and called down.
"Just a second, Hun, I'm on the phone with Pete." He said as the door shut again. My mom sighed.
Minutes later my dad was downstairs, making his plate of food. He sat in his seat and dug in to his big pile of eggs and bacon. He turned to me and finished his bite of food before talking.
"Oh, Colette, can you please pick up Bronx and Saint after school when you pick up Dec? Pete and Meagan are going to be away for a few days so they're going to be staying with us." I nodded. Saint was my brother's age, so they were in the same school. Bronx was a year younger than me, so he went to school with me. Nothing was out of my way.
"Of course, I'll wait at my car for Bronx after school before going to pick the little ones up." My dad smiled and messed up my hair.
"You're the best, Cole." He said as he got up and kissed the top of my head before running to the other side of the table and doing the same to Declan and my mom. I got up right after and grabbed my plate and everyone else's, taking them over to the sink and placing them in the bucket. I slipped on my TOMs as I grabbed my backpack and car keys.
"Come on, Declan, we're going to be late!" I said as my brother got up and grabbed his backpack. My mom got up and walked with us to the door that led to the garage. She gave us both hugs and wished us good days at school before reminding me to not forget to bring home Bronx and Saint. I smiled as I got my brother situated in the car and got in myself, opening the garage door and pulling out of the driveway to the elementary school that my brother attended.
