"How DARE you do this to me!"
Father's yelling woke me up. I was sleeping soundly in bed curled up next a aubrun colored wolf pelt when I heard father yell. For awhile now he'd been acting strange towards me and mother but I don't know why.
Why? Why! I just want my loving kind father back! He didn't even want to tuck me into bed or say goodnight to me, mom had to force to him to. Is that why he's mad? Then he doesn't have to do that anymore! I'll put myself to bed! Just please be my father again!
"He isn't mine Myra! He looks nothing like me or you!"
"Bennett please, you're being ridiculous!"
"Ridiculous? Neither one of us has red hair! And his eyes are too dull to have gotten that from me!"
"Bennett please! I swear I've only ever been loyal to you!"
"Liar!"
I got up from my bed, wolf pelt in hand, bare feet walking along cold wood floor of the cabin we call home and ever so carefully open the door hoping it won't make a squeak.
I could see the shadows of my parents cast down the hallway. I peaked my head around the corner and I see my parents in the living room.
Father paces back and forth, his brown curles bouncing with each step. His dark blue eyes land on my mother. He looks as angry as he sounds.
"Everyone's talking about it. They can all tell! You've humiliated me!"
My mother looks upset, her brown eyes show she's about to cry and her blonde hair is a mess.
"Bennett you're wrong! They're wrong!"
"Then explain Luke! No one in my family had hair like that! Same with yours!"
What's wrong with my hair? It's like father isn't? Maybe my hair is a little brighter than father's but...
"Where are you going!" Mother cried as father headed for the door.
"I can't be here anymore! I can't be in this tribe! Not as an embarrassment. I can't stand the way the tribe looks at me. I can't stand the way they talk behind my back! It's all your fault!"
I didn't understand anything. How could I? I was only 6 back then...
All I could do was shrink away behind the corner as I watched my father walk straight out the door.Never to be seen again....
That morning it was announced that Bennett Brighton had officially left RiverMoon.
I cried and asked mother when father would come back but it was pointless. He was never coming back. Ever.
And it was all my fault... mother blamed me so much. She said it was all my fault father left, it was all my fault that the tribe would look at her with scorn. Maybe it is my fault...
If I had just been born looking a different way than none of that would've happen!
That is what I always thought, what I always believed... right up to the day mother left me alone in the tribe. On my 13th birthday- the day I would be considered an adult in the tribe it was announced that Myra Brighton had left RiverMoon....
Everything is my fault. Everything is my fault! I have no family, no friends, nobody. Why had the Moon Goddess forsaken me?
I just want what everyone else has... a nice family... is that to much Moon Goddess?
