A Moment Of Regret

The walk to the battlefield was uncomfortably quiet, but Paul decides to break the silence. "Derek?" He said. "Yeah?" Said Derek. "Do you feel like a part of you is regretting the decision to fight in the war?" Asked Paul. "A little, why? Having doubts?" Derek asked. "I may be trained to go into battles, but I'm not a professional fighter, I'm a singer." Paul said. Derek nods understandingly. "There are some things we can't take back once they've been said or done, but I get what you're saying nevertheless." He said. "Yeah." Said Paul quietly.

Derek puts a comforting hand on the Beatle bassist's shoulder. "Still thinking about Amanda?" He asked. "It's just... did you hear how calm she was when we said goodbye to each other?" Paul asked. "As a matter of fact, I did. She's really matured about being away from you over the course of your relationship." Said Derek. "You can say that again. Although..." Said Paul as he trailed off.

"What is it this time?" Derek asked. "Some people don't return from wars alive. What if it should happen to one of us?" Paul asked. "Look, it's happened to me on a number of occasions. Seriously, I know how that feels." Said Derek. "Aside from the Unscapable Island scare, what other times did it happen to you?" Asked Paul. "When my mother was kidnapped by Clavius, he sent me a letter saying where to find him. But little did I know, it was a trap." Derek said. "Oh dear!" Paul cried.

"Did I mention I sank into quicksand at one point?" Asked Derek. "You what?!" Asked Paul in shock. "Yep. But if Odette hadn't dove in to save me, I would've died for sure." Derek said. "Glad she came to your rescue when she heard you were in danger." Paul said.

The boys are now five minutes away from the battlefield. But before they could keep walking, Derek stops for a brief moment and thinks about Odette, talking to himself. "Don't lose hope, Odette. I'll make it through this war, I promise." He said through a whisper.

"Did I lose you for a second, Derek?" Asked Paul. "Oh, sorry, Paul. I was just... thinking." Said Derek. "About Odette?" Paul asked. "Yeah. I hope she knows I'll always love her no matter where I am." Derek said. "I'm sure she does, and Amanda too." Said Paul. "Alright, we're closing in on the battlefield. Are you ready for this?" Asked Derek. Sweat drips from Paul's forehead. "No, but I'll stay close to you as much as I can." He said.
