Prologue: the duet

Sunny and Basil were hanging out in Sunny's room. Sunny was practicing for his performance that he was doing with Mari. Sunny was doing great but he always kept messing up at the end of the song, it was pissing him off.

Basil cleared his throat, "I think it's amazing Sunny. You have been getting better and better!"
Sunny put the violin down, "It's not good enough though, it has to be perfect!" Sunny complains.
"It won't be perfect Sunny, nothing ever is. This is the best you can do at the moment and that's okay!" Basil tried to cheer him up.
"My best isn't good enough for Mari! She is gonna be so mad at me!" Sunny sighs, he sits next to Basil. He yawns rubs his eyes. Sunny was tired of the constant practicing over and over.
Basil takes the opportunity to snap a quick picture of Sunny with his camera. Sunny stares him with a confused expression. Basil lets out a little giggle, "What? I couldn't pass up the perfect opportunity to take a sleepy photo!"
"That's....fair honestly" Sunny rolled his eyes.

Normally, Basil and Sunny were pretty quiet kids, but around each other they were like whole other people. Of course, they are their normal people pleaser selves, but they are way more talkative and seem so much happier when together. Whenever Sunny was quiet though, Basil would rant to him about what's going on and how his day was, Sunny liked listening to him talk. It made him happy when he got to hang out with Basil, it's his favorite part of the day.

"Are you nervous...for the performance?" Basil seems curious about how Sunny feels about it.
"Well yeah, I mean it would suck if I messed up and then all of you made fun of me for it." Sunny says in reply to Basil's question. "We won't laugh at you Sunny! Why would we do that?"
"I dunno, I mean...yeah I have no idea..sorry."
Basil sighs, "You don't have to apologize for being worried about something, it's fine Sunny!"
Sunny smiles at Basil, "Thanks Basil...".
Basil smiles as well, "Hey..I have a question.."
Sunny lays down on the bed, "Well, ask away."
Basil lays next to him, "Do you even wanna do that performance with Mari or..?".
"Not really, but I don't wanna let everyone down if I didn't do it. Everyone worked so hard to get me the violin and Mari was so excited to do the duet together." Sunny wraps his arms around Basil's arm. Basil lets out a small sigh and smiles, "I see...well, I can't wait to see you preform with Mari, you are gonna do great! I'll take lots of pictures of you guys."

After a bit, the two just lay there in silence. Basil
speaks up, trying to start up a conversation.
"Do you think we-" He turns his head to look at Sunny cuddling his arm..he was asleep. A tiny blush appeared on Basil's face. He touches his face and feels the warmth. He was confused on why he is face was so warm. Why was he blushing? Sunny was just his friend, that's all. "Rest up now...because soon will be the moment we all have been waiting to come for weeks." Basil mutters, even though he knows Sunny can't hear him. Shortly after, he falls asleep too.

Basil wakes up to Mari knocking on the room door. Basil lets out a little yawn and rubs his eyes. He sits up, he mutters; "Come in..?". Mari walks into the room, she smiles when she sees her little brother sleeping. "Come on, wake him up so me and him can practice up a little bit before it's time to preform." Mari says while grabbing the violin from off the floor. Basil
gives Sunny a few little gentle pokes on the shoulder to try to wake him up. "Sunny?...Sunny wake up." Basil says softly. Sunny wakes up, he sits up and rubs his eyes. "What time is it..?" He asks. Mari spoke up, "Well it's time to practice, that's what." Sunny rolls his eyes, "I've been practicing with Basil all day.". "Yeah well we need to see what we sound like together, alright? So come on and get up." She demanded, she used a kind voice hoping Sunny would listen. Sunny gets up and grabs his violin, he follows Mari to her room where they keep the piano.

The two of them practiced together, to most people, they sounded amazing. But of course, Mari thought otherwise, she wanted it to be perfect but it wasn't, it wasn't good enough for her. "You keep messing up at the end, it's sad. We have been practicing forever now for this and you can't even play one simple note Sunny." She didn't mean to come off rude, she was just very passionate about this. "Well maybe if you would help me out instead of telling me how horrible I am, we wouldn't have this problem!" Sunny snaps at her. He puts down the violin and runs out of the room. He was pretty pissed off at Mari.

Mari runs after him, "Sunny cut it out! We don't have time for you to act like a child!" She shoves the violin in his hands. He stares at her for a moment. "You're right, we don't have time for this." He throws the violin down the stairs, breaking it. Mari looks furious, eyes filled with anger. Sunny didn't expect the violin to break..he felt really bad about that. "Are you crazy?! Our friends worked their asses off to get you that! And you just break it?! You are so ungrateful Sunny!" Mari screams at him. "Just leave me alone Mari!" Sunny tries to walk away and go downstairs to get a snack in the kitchen so he can't get his mind off of all this. Mari grabs his arm, he didn't like this so he shoves her. She almost goes flying down the stairs, but she catches herself on the railing. Both their hearts were pounding...someone seriously could have gotten hurt. She pulls herself back up. She stares at him for a minute. Sunny was about to apologize for what he did but before he could, she slapped him across the face.

Basil saw everything, he had came out of the room when he first heard yelling. He saw the fighting, violin being thrown down the stairs, he saw Mari being pushed, and he saw Sunny being slapped. "Why..why are you guys like this..?" Basil muttered. Mari's eyes widened when she realized Basil was there the whole time. "Basil...I'm sorry. Can you go tell the others the duet is canceled, please?" She spoke in a soft and kind voice, unlike the rude and bossy one she spoke to Sunny in moments ago. "a..alright..." Basil goes to tell everyone the news.
