Frozen in the spot, looking at Gaipa's retreating figure until I couldn't see him anymore. Wanting to shout for him to come back, afraid of what I'll find if I looked at Khan's handsome face.
"Your new boyfriend?" Khan asked, his voice still tight and tense.
"No, he's... he's just a friend," I stuttered.
"A friend in whose house you sleep in every night?" He smirks in that familiar sarcastic humor that is uniquely Khan's.
"How did you know that?" I finally looked up and my breath hitched at the nostalgia that hit me upon seeing Khan's very familiar and loved face. He is older now and the 18 year old face has now sculpted further, enhancing what was his already prominent cheekbones back then and his aristocratic nose. Khan was handsome back then, now he is an absolutely stunning man at 28.
"I've been here since earlier. I've even had breakfast with your mother. She told me about your boyfriend, Gaipa right? I just heard from a neighbor of yours I met in Bangkok that you've been back home for awhile. I drove here at the break of dawn," he said.
"I'm sorry, I thought about calling you and Wat... I just..." looking at Khan's rarely serious face staring back at me.
"What Akk? You decided you don't care about us?" Khan retorts, crossly challenging me with his tone and stance.
"No... I felt embarrassed and apologetic. I know I don't even deserve to be forgiven, so I'm afraid to show my face to you and Wat," I confessed, my tears falling.
"You idiot! You are our best friend Akk! We've wondered where you were and how you were doing the last fucking 10 years, why would you think we don't want to see you? Why won't we forgive you?" The last question now a whisper, Khan obviously having gotten emotional.
"I'm sorry Khan, I messed up your life in Suppalo. You and Wat were so happy we were already in our senior year. You said you both wanted it to be the best year, so we can always remember with fondness. Instead, I ruined it for you. I made everyone hate you and all the student prefects. Everyone must have blamed you for what I did and I felt ashamed that I went that far. I know they were wrong and dangerous but I just wanted to stop them from ruining Suppalo, especially not under my rule," I sob as I hugged Khan.
"I'm so sorry Khan," I held him so tightly, afraid he'd vanish and that this was just all a dream. Finally, Khanlong is here in front of me, I'm hugging him. I am finally apologizing to him, I am finally getting the chance to beg him for understanding.
To my utter bewilderment, Khan just said, "Akk you are really an idiot who wasted 10 years of your life! We were not mad at you for the mistake you made! Who cares about what other people think! We were going to be there and stand behind you. What I and Wat hated was the fact that you never told us about Chadok's manipulation, you kept to yourself the pressure you must have felt back then. We are your best friends, you should have told us so we could help you. And then you were gone suddenly, we couldn't help you at all! We don't even know where to look for you! Akk! 10 years! And you finally came back but never thought we wanted to know that the moment you arrived?" He punched me in the shoulders, but knowing how athletic Khan is, it wasn't a punch meant to hurt me.
