After lunch, Judith and Judah go to their extra course classes. Mrs. Johnston – their extra-curricular teacher for several courses – introduces herself and takes all her students' measurements.
"Good afternoon, everyone!", Mrs. Johnston shouts.
"Good afternoon!", the first-grade students reply energetically.
"My name is Mrs. Johnston, and I will be your extra course teacher. I teach multiple courses, as your previous teacher has done. We will begin by taking your measurements. Will the first volunteer please step up?", Mrs. Johnston asks.
After all the students' heights, weights, and any personal misfortunes are checked and taken, Mrs. Johnston gives the healthy students their first assignment.
"Today we will start with your physical health and education. From there, you will be practicing your chosen language. For your physical education, we will play a game of "capture the flag". However, you will be in groups of two – or pairs. There will be a timer set for forty-five minutes. The team with the most flags once the timer goes off will be the winner.", Mrs. Johnston explains as she grabs a bucket of poles and different colored flags.
"Excuse me-", a girl starts to say.
"Yes, you will be allowed to use your EUA's.", Mrs. Johnston interrupts inoffensively.
The children's cheers can be heard from two stories high.
"While you are permitted to use your EUAs, you cannot hurt anyone! Got it?", she asks gravely.
"Got it!", the children reply earnestly.
Mrs. Johnston hands the students their flags – offering some advice and rules after the duos are decided, "Here are your flags. You must work with your partner, you can study your opponents and form a plan. You will go to your posts and start when I say."
She starts the timer and stands on the side supervising, "You may begin!"
Some kids immediately leave their partner to guard their flag – attempting to take someone else's. Others would wait for an opening to capture their opponents' flag.
"Judah, there are twenty people in this class, so, we have eighteen enemies right now. Look around and then tell me what you see. Okay?", Judith implies, placing their flag in the middle of a small playhouse on the school's playground.
"Alright.", Judah looks outside of their fortress.
"What do you see?", Judith wonders.
"Some people are defending or attacking. Some other people are trying to sneak for the flag.", Judah replies.
"What about their powers?", she asks impatiently.
"Calm down! Oh my goodness- Ah!", Judah ducks as a quill is thrown into the playhouse, "What the heck?"
"What is that?", Judith pulls the quill out of the ground and looks towards the active children, "A porcupine! Look! They're... in a spider web, they're stuck... Glad it's not me."
"Look at the person with the big feet, what's that?", Judah's pointing guides Judith's eyes and she says, "A kangaroo, I think..."
"What's a kangaroo?"
"...."
"Judith!"
"I can't explain it."
"Oh...", he looks out again, "What's that messy hair kid do?"
"She's... I don't know..."
"She looks so weird."
"Oh! A leather nose monkey!"
