Alex was filled with dread, as he held his cellphone.

[ Amity, you should come visit, soon as possible, something has happened. ] * texting
[ Okay, I can be there tomorrow morning. you can tell me in person, friend. ]
He felt his stomach twisting, he dropped the phone, and rushed to the bathroom, vomiting from grief, stress and pain.

He didn't even say anything to James, just cleaning himself up before going to bed.

The next morning he stole one of James' shirts, got dressed and connected himself to his feeding tube. He felt guilty that Amity had no idea her friend couldn't eat anymore. Sooner than he'd expected, she knocked on the door. Before Alex could even get up from the seat he confined himself to, James answered the door.
"Amity, thank you for coming. Fair warning, Alex is much worse than when you last saw him." James said. Amity nodded acknowledging Alex's worsening condition before James led her back to Alex's room.
Alex couldn't hide his scowl. " Christ almighty! I can tell her myself, I'm not buried yet!"
"Well, that's a relief." Amity replied.
James looked at Alex, walk over and kissed the top of his head, " I'm sorry kid, I'll leave you alone now "
" It's alright dumbass."
" Love you too!" James yelled as he was walking out
Amity gazed at Alex's feeding tube for a moment and realized that underneath that, the nasal cannula was there as well. Seeing wires obstruct the view of her friend broke her heart. "Alex, when did you get those sexy tubes?"
He burst into what appeared to be painfully hard laughter.
" Missed you too dork."
He sighed, "Come on, I won't bite if you sit by me"
, he gestured to the recliner chair, next to his bed where He sat cross legged, across from her.
Amity without hesitation sat in the recliner. "Ooh, it's spinny too! This is a fun chair! Anyway, what did you need to tell me?"
Alex's large grin faltered, replaced by a smile of anxiety.
He reached out for Amity's hand. " I don't know how I should say this, bear with me."
Amity with a twinge of worry in her face looks at Alex. "I'm here. You can tell me anything."
" nothing will ever be the same once I do.." He whispered.
"That's okay. We tackle change together."
He sighed, already feeling choked up.
" I-, I don't know if we can this time. I'm dying, Amity , I have maybe a little less than a year."
By now he had let go of her hands, wiping his tears.
Amity had always had a hard time being able to physically cry because of her antidepressants. In this moment however, things felt different. She didn't have to force the tears to come out. They came out on their own. She cried with Alex for a few moments before she could finally choke out a response. "Well, if we don't have much time, we have to make each moment count."
Alex felt overwhelmed, even though everything was happening to him physically, he had felt detached till now.
"Christ almighty...I'm really dying.." he muttered, tears streaming.
"Are you okay Alex?"
He just hugged her, unsure of what he felt.
She reciprocated gladly.
"It's okay bestie, James and I promise that you will never be lonely."
