The news can never be good and happy. That's all Mal can think about. Yes, she would have a daughter, and she would have magic just like her own and her grandmother's. No matter what Nanny or Rashid say about there being no good or bad magic, for her there is, and the baby would have the worst of it...
For the last few months, all Mal could think about was this question and if she could, she would go to her husband and shout at him and speak. "I told you so!", but there's something else involved now, she and the baby both need magic to live. Beautiful mother-daughter relationship.
"Mal, are you okay?"
Rashid asks, worried about his friend. She hasn't said anything for a good few minutes, just standing there in the same position without saying anything. Nanny asks him to let her absorb the news.
"Call Evie, I need to see her."
Mal says, her voice a little hoarse after being silent for so long.
"Okay, I'll do that."
"Come on, I'll take you to the room."
Nanny offers her a room so that she can get out of the armchair in the living room. She takes her to the spare room, which has only one bed and has been empty for some time. It's enough for the half-purple fairy to be alone and cry a little.
(...)
"M., hi, I'm here."
Evie bursts into the small room Mal is in.
"Evie."
Mal sees her friend and throws herself into a tight hug. She rests her head on the shoulder of the Evil Queen's daughter and cries some more.
"Hey, I'm here." Evie tried to tell her, but Mal didn't want to do anything other than cry. Evie sat on the bed and hugged her as if she were a young child, and Mal stayed there. Although the blue-haired girl had no idea what was going on so far, she knew that her friend needed her. "So, do you want to talk?"
"No, not now."
Mal is feeling seventeen again, full of fear.
"All right, anytime, just talk."
(...)
"The baby has my mother's magic."
After a long time, she found the courage to say it out loud.
"What?"
Evie asks, trying to understand. Mal has been silent for so long and was expecting to hear nothing.
"And it seems she's looking for magic in me, and this will happen until I run out of magic, and she's dependent on magic like me. Isn't life amazing?"
She says, laughing and crying at the same time.
"Mal, speak slowly and explain it to me."
"Sorry, E. ask Rashid to tell you, I still... I... still... I... still..."
She can't say anything, at least not now, her head is in a state of confusion.
"Okay, don't say anything. I'm going to talk to Rashid and get you a glass of water."
She left, leaving her friend in the room.
(...)
"May I come in?" Nanny asks, knocking on the door. The purple-haired woman looked up to see the lovely lady, and only nodded to allow her in. "Well, I'm not Evie, but I'm here, and I brought you this." She says, pointing to the piece of strawberry tart in her hands. "I hear it's your favorite fruit."
"That's very kind of you, but I'm not hungry."
Mal replied and was about to turn away, but felt an arm on her shoulder, stopping her.
"Haven't you ever been told that you can't deny an old fairy her food?"
She looked at Mal seriously.
"All right, but just a little." Mal agrees, taking the plate believing that she would only eat a spoonful, but as soon as she chews she realizes that Nanny literally has fairy hands. "That's very good."
"I'm glad you like it." She smiles as she watches the girl eat and takes advantage of the rare moment to get closer. The fairy needs to work up the courage to talk to her. "I know that if I ask you, you won't want to talk." She says, as she runs her hands through the purple hair of the girl, who is still enjoying her candy. "So, I'm just going to talk, and you're just going to listen. I don't know if you know, but unfortunately I have telepathy, it's not something I like, but I have to accept it and live with it." She reveals the power that shocked the girl, but even that didn't make the spoon leave her hand. "Mal, don't make any decisions yet." The girl leaves the plate, paying attention to her. "I've already told you, you can be your greatest strength or weakness."
"Are you reading my mind all this time?"
Mal really disregarded everything that had been said and only paid attention to the part about the superpower.
"You swear you only heard that part?"
"That's hard to ignore. How long have you been doing this, Nanny? How long have you been reading people's minds?"
"There's no when, I was just born that way, the same way you can turn into a dragon with ease and so can she." Nanny put her hand on her belly, smiling. "She's going to turn into a beautiful dragon with huge wings too."
"Will she?" Mal put her hand on her belly, smiling as she imagined her daughter turning into a dragon like her. "Of course, her magic comes from the dragon that killed the kingdoms." The smile faded at the thought of who had rewarded her with the transformation.
"Mal, doesn't do that to you, you still have your magic that goes to her."
"Yes, but she's only a baby, Nanny." She tried to hold back tears. "A little baby who has nothing to do with me or my mom."
Nanny wasn't going to say that she can feel other people's emotions too, because it's hard enough to bear all her sadness without being able to cry like her.
"Look." She lifted her granddaughter's chin so that she could hear her. "She'll have the courage of you and your mother, the will to be free, and the sense of humor will be yours."
"That's Ben's job, he's the one who sees the positive side, not me. Can you get Rashid for me? I want to ask him something."
She asks, holding her face again. Nothing would cheer her up at that moment.
"Mal, you're not making that decision yet."
The fairy asked.
"Nanny, I appreciate what you're doing, but I have to do what's necessary."
"Okay."
She kissed the girl on the forehead and left the room.
(...)
"No! Not at all, Mal! Are you crazy?"
Rashid rages at her. The cat man doesn't get angry often, but what Mal has said has made him turn red and his feline whiskers return to his face.
"Rashid, listen to me..."
She tries to talk calmly and now without crying.
"Mal, sorry to interrupt, but Ben's been calling for hours."
Evie entered the room, showing her friend her phone with her husband on the line.
That's when she realized she'd been away from home all day. She quickly picked up her cell phone and saw the numerous calls.
"Give me here, Evie."
She asked her friend for her phone
"Talk to Ben, explain everything, then we'll look at your idea."
Rashid grabbed her wrist and said firmly, as if he were her father or something. He stopped her from answering the phone just then, only to face him and hear him say it.
Mal takes a deep breath. She hates being contradicted or, worse, being wrong.
"Ben..."
