The next day, I woke up to a follow request on Instagram from Megan. I accepted it, and texted Riley, glad that her friends seemed to like me.
Right after I sent Riley the next about Megan following me, she called me. I was in my room, sitting on my bed, petting Sunshine.
"Megan requested to follow you on Instagram?" Riley confirmed.
"She did...is there a problem with that?" I asked Riley.
"No...I mean, I don't think so? It's just...okay, Megan has hooked up with a couple of girls that I have hooked up with in the past. This was years ago, back in college, though. It's water under the bridge now. I guess it just made me think of that," Riley said back to me.
"She did make a comment that I found interesting while you were talking to your mom. She said that I seem way better than other girls you've been with," I told Riley, "That's pretty lousy that she did that to you, though."
"Yeah, I was quite pissed at the time. But hmm...that comment is a little bit odd of her to make. I'm going to chalk it up to nothing though," Riley said, "Though I really appreciate you telling me, Jenny."
"Of course," I said to Riley, "I wouldn't want to keep anything from you."
"I'd never keep anything from you either," Riley said back to me.
I believed her.
That next week at work, I was sitting with Riley in her cubicle, as she was showing me how to place a complicated order for an account, and Danielle walked in.
"Hey, friends!" Danielle greeted us, "I have a question for you both."
Riley and I glanced at each other for a split second, and I knew we were both thinking the same thing.
Does Danielle know about us?
"What's up?" Riley asked as we turned to Danielle.
"Are you both busy this weekend? Demarcus turns 31 this Friday, August 12th, and I wanted to throw him a surprise birthday bash. I was thinking on Saturday."
"I'm not doing anything," I said, "I think that's a great idea."
"Same here," Riley said, "I'm in. And if you need help with anything, don't hesitate to ask."
"Awesome, thank you!" Danielle smiled, and she then turned to me and asked, "Jenny, when is your birthday? Riley, I know yours is coming up in September. The 6th, right?"
"That's correct," Riley nodded.
"My birthday is November 18th," I said.
"Ah, you're a Scorpio," Danielle said, "It makes sense that I like you. Anyway, I will text you both the details about the party."
Danielle walked away and Riley turned to me jokingly, "Maybe that's why I like you so much, too. Because you're a Scorpio."
I laughed and said, "Who knows, that could factor into it."
"I don't know a single thing about astrology," Riley chuckled, "But I think it's sweet that Danielle wants to do something for Demarcus."
Hm. Maybe I should start thinking of something that I can do for Riley?
Danielle texted us later that week that she was able to plan a surprise party that Saturday with Demarcus's mom, Corrine, and it would be at Danielle's house. Danielle still lived with her parents- and Riley told me that like the beach house, her parent's house was quite big.
Danielle asked a few people if they wanted to come over early and help set up, including Riley and me.
We agreed to, and Riley picked me up from my apartment on Saturday afternoon to head to Danielle's.
