Right after Sara said this, I glanced over at Riley, who said to Sara in a tone I didn't often hear from her, "There's no need. Jenny knows who she is dating."
I looked at Sara as well, "Seriously, Sara. There's no need for this conversation."
Sara looked annoyed as she said to us, "Fine. Jenny, I was just trying to do you a favor. Hopefully, Riley doesn't emotionally abandon you like she did to my sister."
"Alright, seriously?" Riley glowered at Sara, "This is not necessary at all."
"I felt like it was," Sara said back, crossing her arms, "I just wanted to give you a forewarning, Jenny."
I looked at Sara, "No need. I'm very happy with Riley. Nothing you say to me won't change that, nor do I not know."
Riley shot me a grateful glance.
Sara looked like she didn't know what to say for a moment. She opened her mouth to speak, but Riley spoke instead.
"I really do not appreciate you coming out here and trying to essentially sabotage my relationship," Riley said to Sara, "It's been over a couple of years now that your sister and I broke up. I've moved on, clearly."
"I wasn't trying to sabotage anything," Sara said in an icy tone, "But whatever. Enjoy the rest of your night."
She then turned on her heel and walked back into the house, the door slamming behind her.
Riley and I turned to each other.
"Well, that was completely unnecessary," I spoke, "Are you alright?"
Riley nodded and took my hand, "I'm good. I just really don't want what she said to get into your head or anything. I've told you that I was less than perfect in my relationship with Rebecca. I wound up dealing with a lot mentally and yes, I could've been there more for her emotionally, but-"
"Riley, I know. You don't have to convince me of anything," I reassured her.
"I know. I just really want you to know that I'd never do that to you," Riley said, looking into my eyes.
"I know," I said, flashing her a soft smile, "Plus, isn't Rebecca the one that wound up cheating on you? By the way Sara spoke, you'd think Rebecca was perfect in the relationship."
"She wasn't, by any means. We both weren't. But I'm past that. I'm with you now, and that's not going to change."
I leaned in and kissed Riley's cheek, "No, it's not. I love you, Riley. Nothing will change that."
"I love you too, Jenny. Want to head back inside? You must be so cold."
I nodded and chuckled, "I am. Let's go back in."
When we got inside, Stephanie told us that Sara and Justin had left.
"Sara looked angry," Stephanie said, "Did something happen outside?"
"I'll tell you more later when we're not around everyone," I said to Stephanie.
She nodded and said, "Well, at least she's gone."
Johnny lifted up his beer, "I'll drink to that!"
Riley laughed and held up the beer that she had grabbed, "Cheers."
Danielle had a huge flatscreen TV in her basement, where the New Year's Eve bash in New York City was displayed for all of us to watch, and countdown until the New Year.
As it got closer to midnight, we all crowded around the TV.
"This is the best part," Danielle said, "I love ringing in the new year."
