In the shadows

*

Kaylani didn't know why her brother made her stay in the shadows, she didn't know why he made that decision and not her. He let Inej stay in the shadows because she liked it that way, and it was one of her many skills. But staying in the shadows wasn't a skill of Hers, it never had been. She was born an inferni, she could manipulate the fire around her. She knew kaz was smart, So why wouldn't he play to her skills and let her out of the shadows? She still didn't have an answer.

Kaylani had reacted differently to the events that happened on Reapers Barge, she could stand touch, it made her feel warm and comforted inside. It felt just like she felt whenever she used her power, it never was too hot, it never burned her. Or it never was too cold that it pulled her under the water. She felt at ease whenever she physically touched someone. But then again, there's always a price to pay in the barrel.

When she didn't use her power for a certain period of time, she'd get sick. At first she'd just feel more tired that usual, but the longer she went the worse it got. She wouldn't feel physically sick when she went a while without physical contact, instead she'd feel lonely, then that would drive her to be sick. She would sit in her room and do nothing. Then when she'd finally snap out of it, her arms and legs were jelly and she could barely keep her eyes open.

Kaylani and Kaz would argue endlessly about her using her power on heists. She would says it's helpful and he'd say it's dangerous. That would be the end of the arguement, Kaylani would walk out of the room and slam the door off it's hinges. Sometimes she didn't know what to do after their arguments, she loved her brother, but she hated how he made all her decisions for her.

Sometimes she'd find some old warehouse and sit behind it and start a small fire, then Jesper would come and join her.

Oh Jesper, her bestfriend. They knew everything about eachother. Well most things, Kaylani kept some things to herself seeing as if she told him he'd know that kaz went through it too. Jesper didn't know that she knew he was a durast, she'd figured it out almost immediately. She decided that he would tell her when he's ready, and that she wouldn't forced it out of him. They'd sit in front of the fire and Jesper would listen to Kaylani talk about the argument with kaz. In the end he always ended up cheering her up, making her laugh, or making her blush.

Sometimes Inej would even join them, and they'd have all sorts of fun together. At times Kaylani felt bad that Kaz didn't have anyone to talk to, she knew he wouldn't even breathe when someone asked him how he felt but that didn't mean he didn't deserve to have someone to talk to.

Kaylani wondered how much longer she'd have to live in Ketterdam, weather or not she would eventually make enough money to leave this place and move to a farm, have her horses, two cats and a dog, maybe even some ducks. As she got older she still wanted all those things, but she realised everyone else was earning money for something more important, and she couldn't help but feel her dreams were childish and that there were better things to focus on because no matter how hard she tried she wouldn't get enough money, and even if she did, how would she know when the right time to settled down was.

One "simple" opportunity was all it took for Kaylani to count her dreams as achievable. One opportunity that presented itself on one ordinary day, would change her life.
