Daryl was injured, alone, and he had no idea where his friend—his family had gone. When the prison fell, he ran until he couldn't run anymore. He tried to track them; he searched so hard, but it was a lost cause.
When the walkers surrounded him, he didn't fear their growls, the pain that would come when they tore into his flesh. He feared being alone, becoming one of the dead and aimlessly roaming the Earth.
But then she came; she jumped straight into the middle of the chaos, killing the walkers alongside him.
She saved his life.
She promised to help him heal and find his family.
"You've got to promise me one thing in return, though, Dixon," she said, trying to hide her grin.
"Yeah, depends what?" Daryl replied with a raised eyebrow.
"I will help you find your family, but you have to promise not to fall in love with me."
He snorted in response, "yeah, that will never happen; I promise you that."
One year later.
Daryl walked through the streets of Alexandria; he didn't like the confines of the walls, not after the prison, but true to her word, she had helped him find his family. She kept her promise, and everyone was happy, settled, safe and together.
But while she kept her own promise, he hadn't been able to keep his own.
He would watch her from a distance, imagining how her lips would feel against his own, wondering how her skin would feel against his fingertips.
Daryl approached her at the main gates; his stomach was in knots, his palms sweating, and the unfamiliar feeling in his chest took over as she smiled at him.
He hadn't planned what to say, but as he stood before her, the words fell from his mouth in a quick, chaotic jumble.
"I-I don't break promises. One thing my Momma taught me was not to make promises I couldn't keep. I didn't think I'd break my promise, but I might have- I did."
She tilted her head and grinned, "what promise?" she teased.
"I promised not to fall in love with you, but I feel things for you that I never have anyone before."
She leaned in closer. He almost believed she would kiss him, but her warm breath tickled his ear as she whispered, "I'm glad you broke that promise."
