Su's family is large, but the house is small, so Ji Qingchi and her companions were only allocated a secluded small house.
The maid who brought them over conveyed the words of Su's grandmother, apologizing, "Everyone else has children, except for Miss Nineteen. So we can only inconvenience you."
Su Yi is the nineteenth granddaughter of Su Jie. The others are much older than her. The eldest has not only children but even granddaughters. It's really pitiful to squeeze such a large family into a small house. Therefore, Su's grandmother tried her best to allocate bigger rooms to those who have children, and as for Su Yi, who doesn't have children, naturally, she could only get a small room.
Ji Qingchi had no objections to this. After all, she could survive in any harsh environment.
She smiled faintly at the maid and said, "It's alright. It's quiet here, and I really like it. I think this peaceful environment is beneficial to the wife's health. We're thankful to grandmother, for finding us this place."
The maid breathed a sigh of relief. As she was about to leave, Ji Qingchi stopped her and asked, "Wait... I want to know, does every person who wants to see the grandmother have to give money to the guards at the door?"
She had been wanting to ask this question since she entered. After all, Su Jie still holds an official position, so why would they treat everyone who comes to see her like bandits and demand money from them?
"Oh." Upon hearing this question, the maid's smile suddenly faded, her face turned pale, and she quickly looked outside to make sure no one was eavesdropping. Then she approached Ji Qingchi and whispered, "Miss nineteen's Lord, this place is now under the control of our house's patriarch. He has made a rule that anyone who wants to see the elder must first give money to the guards."
The lord she mentioned naturally referred to the husband of Su's family aunt.
After hearing the man's word, targeting Su Ming, Ji Qingchi was not surprised by his actions. But did Su Jie and Su's grandmother not know about this? Did they allow him to do this?
"Do Su's aunt and the grandmother know about this?" Ji Qingchi asked.
"Miss knows, but the elder doesn't."
Ji Qingchi nodded. She had guessed that if Su Jie knew about this, that man would surely face consequences.
After thinking for a moment, Ji Qingchi asked again, "The aunt knows what's her husband been doing, what is her stance on it?"
"Miss has mentioned it a few times, but Lord does not listen to her. They have had a few arguments over it. Over time, Miss stopped caring about it."
"Alright, I understand. Thank you."
"Miss is too polite."
After the maid left, Ji Qingchi wandered around the mansion, gathering information about Su's family.
After casually chatting with a few maids, they all said that the lord of this house was fierce and stingy, and couldn't stand to see anyone doing well. As for the aunt, she was a non-confrontational person, and the two of them often quarreled, sometimes even involving Su Jie.
After gathering this information, Ji Qingchi leisurely strolled back to her own house.
As she opened the door, she saw Su Yi and Su Ming sitting inside, seemingly in the midst of a discussion. As soon as they saw her, they stopped talking and turned their heads towards her.
Seeing Ji Qingchi returning, Su Ming furrowed her brows involuntarily. Su Yi, noticing the tension, quickly spoke up, interrupting any reprimands she had for Ji Qingchi, "Where did my husband go? Has he eaten? I'll have Licorice instruct someone to prepare a meal."
Ji Qingchi looked shyly, and her favorability towards Su Yi increased a bit. "Just now, I went out for a walk, intending to find you, wife but I ended up getting lost."
Now Su Ming couldn't say anything to reprimand her. Seeing how her daughter's eyes were glued to Ji Qingchi since she came in, she sighed inwardly, realizing that with the arrival of the son-in-law, the daughter forgets the mother. Helpless, she gave a few instructions to Ji Qingchi and returned to her own room.
Although her mother had left, Suyi still had to maintain an image of being devoted to her husband. So she pushed the wheelchair over to Ji Qingchi's side and softly asked, "Is my husband hungry?"
Ji Qingchi played along, with the appearance of a caring husband. "It's alright, my wife. Why is the wife frowning so much? Did something happen when you were talking to Grandmother?"
As she spoke, she raised her hand as if to smooth out the creases between Suyi's brows, showcasing a distressed expression. "Wife, please don't worry. You have just recovered from a serious illness. You mustn't stress yourself."
Before Ji Qingchi could touch her, Su Yi trembled and grabbed her hand. A forced smile appeared on her pale face. "I'm fine, husband, do you want to hear what grandma said?"
Ji Qingchi glanced up slightly, there was a subtle shimmer in her gaze as she looked at Su Yi. She bit her lip, hesitated for a moment, and said, "That was something Grandmother said to the women. As a man and a commoner, if I were to listen, would Grandmother not blame me?"
Knowing that it was meant specifically for women, yet still wanting to listen. Fine, if she wants to listen, then so be it. But to be so unnatural about it, must she be so insistent until she gets her way?
Suyi's internal thoughts screamed, but she forced another smile and said, "It's not really a secret. It won't cause any trouble."
Ji Qingchi seemed relieved and gazed at her tenderly, her eyes shimmering with watery light. She half-spoke, half-held back, "Alright then, Wife, please go ahead and tell me."
