I slipped on my baggy high-waisted jeans and lazily tucked in my colour blocked blouse, faking a smile into the mirror, eyes wide trying to breathe. Counting down from ten was the only thing I could do to calm my nerves for what was going to be the biggest step in my life. This was it, today was the day I was going to purchase my school supplies for the new school year. Other girls and boys my age would be buying new pencil cases, new pens and special mathematical rulers but not me, not y/n Granger.

A wand, cauldron and telescope were at the top of my list today. Definitely not something I thought I'd be buying this time last year. Not for what I thought would be my last Summer before secondary school.

"Seven..."

"Six..."

"Fi-"

"Y/n, are you coming? Mum and Dad are already in the car!" My twin sister Hermione interrupted me shouting up the stairs before I heard her footsteps on the gravel outside the front of the house. I sighed having been interrupted in my zen moment.

"And.. five, four, three, two, one," I counted to myself quickly, picking up a scrumpled up parchment envelope and shoving it into my pocket.

I ran down the stairs as fast as my legs would carry me, hoping my trainers wouldn't fall off as I jumped the last couple of steps to speed up my movement.

"Come on Y/n, we're going to be late. We're supposed to be meeting Professor McGonagall in 30 minutes. Don't you want to make a good impression by not being late for once?" Hermione sighed as if we didn't have 45 minutes to get to our destination.

My eyes rolled as I opened the door and slid into the backseat of the car. I loved my sister, but aside from our looks, we had nothing in common. Hermione was book smart, and a bit of a teacher's pet; although she'd never admit it. Homework was always done well before deadlines, extra credit was always asked for and it was guaranteed that she'd be indoors on a Saturday with her nose buried in a book.

"We have loads of time girls, don't worry," Mum said straightening up the rearview mirror so she could keep an eye on us both, mainly me, during the car journey into London. I raised my eyebrow to her reflection.

The drive through Hampstead into London was relatively quiet. Hermione had brought a book for the journey and had dived headfirst into The Secret Garden. I have to admit that I did love the book, it was like my own little secret that I enjoyed reading, but I couldn't stomach reading anything like that while we were on our way to some magical alleyway. I couldn't stomach anything other than re-reading that letter.

I pulled out the envelope from my jeans and stared at it, trying to focus my eyes on the cursive handwriting on the front.

It had arrived almost 10 months ago by now and it was all I had thought about since. My sister received hers first, October 22nd, and I have to admit I thought it was a bit of a joke from the school bully until mine arrived through the chimney as the clock struck midnight on the 23rd. Yes, there were 9 minutes between us, so she was technically older and she would not let me forget it. It did mean that we had separate birthdays though.

Later that day there was a stern looking lady knocking at our door with what I thought was a Halloween costume on. She announced herself as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Before she stepped into the doorway she'd congratulated the both of us for our acceptance to the school in a strong Scottish accent, then spent the evening explaining to our parents what Hogwarts was and that both of their daughters were in fact, witches. Witches, HA.

Y/n Granger the Witch.

It had a ring to it that I couldn't help but love. Of course, we were sworn to secrecy and couldn't say a word to anyone. Telling my friends that I was going off to boarding school after Summer was the other hardest thing I had to do. I'd thought to myself, will they replace me? Will I replace them? The idea of making new friends was daunting.

There were two pieces of parchment in the envelope. One was the standard letter, and the other was filled with a list of items, clothing, and books that we needed. My eyes fixated on the first piece of parchment, and then on the other hiding a long shopping list for the day.

To think that it was August already, and I would be at this magic school within the next month. The next few weeks in fact. My life was literally changing forever, both of our lives and I was kind of excited to share this with my nerd of a sister. Maybe we'd actually end up being better friends.

My train of thought was interrupted by the car coming to a halt. I looked out the window and we had parked the car in some groggy back alley in Central London.

"Are you sure this is where we're supposed to be?" I asked staring at a cat outside perched on a broken brick wall. The cat's eyes fixated on the car and looked as if it was looking inside the car.

"Yes sweetheart, this is the exact street that your professor had pointed to," Dad said opening the door and stepping onto the cracked pavement.

Within seconds the cat that was staring at us had morphed into a person. That person being Professor McGonagall.

"Good morning Mr and Mrs Granger, Hermione, Y/n." She paused looking at each of us as she said our names. "Let me take you to Diagon Alley."
