M A R L I E ' S P O V:
~In the middle of the night~
AS I TURNED THE KEY IN THE DOOR, the familiar creak echoed through the silent apartment. The place had been untouched for days, devoid of any signs of life. My sister Caitlin's worried face flashed in my mind as I stepped inside. The apartment felt colder than usual, and the air hung heavy with unspoken words.
THE LIVING ROOM WAS DIMLY LIT, curtains were drawn shut, creating a cocoon of shadows. The faint scent of dried tears lingered, a haunting reminder of the emotional turmoil that had unfolded here. I took a deep breath, steadying myself before making my way to the kitchen.
CAITLIN SAT AT THE TABLE, her eyes tired but filled with concern. Her fingers traced the rim of her coffee mug as she looked up at me. The silence between us spoke volumes, carrying the weight of unshared secrets.
Caitlin: Marlie, where have you been?
I SIGHED, sinking into the chair opposite her. The truth lingered on the tip of my tongue, a bitter taste that I hesitated to release.
Marlie: I needed time, Cai. Everything has been too much.
Caitlin: We were worried about you. I've been worried about you.
SHE PAUSED, studying my face as if searching for answers written in the lines and shadows.
Caitlin: I found something, Marlie. About Chris Paulson.
MY HEART SKIPPED A BEAT, anxiety clawing at the edges of my consciousness.
Marlie: What did you find?
CAITLIN TOOK A DEEP BREATH, her eyes locking with mine.
Caitlin: Chris Paulson is not our father. He's our uncle.
THE REVELATION HUNG IN THE AIR, a heavy truth that demanded acknowledgment. I struggled to comprehend the magnitude of this revelation. The man we believed to be our father had betrayed us most fundamentally.
Marlie: Our uncle? How is that possible?
CAITLIN EXPLAINED THE TWISTED FAMILY HISTORY, the web of deceit that had entangled us for so long. Chris Paulson, the villain we had called family, had manipulated our lives, casting shadows over our memories and relationships.
Marlie: So, who is our real father?
Caitlin: He saved Mom. That's all I know for now. But Chris is in Iron Heights. He can't hurt us anymore.
THE WEIGHT OF THE REVELATION SETTLED ON MY SHOULDERS, a mix of relief and pain. My mind raced with unspoken questions, but Caitlin's worried gaze anchored me to the present.
Caitlin: Where have you been, Marlie? Why did you leave like that?
Marlie: I... I needed time to process everything. To understand who I am without the lies.
CAITLIN REACHED ACROSS THE TABLE, squeezing my hand in reassurance.
Caitlin: You're not alone, Marlie. We'll figure this out together.
