The smell of fresh waffles perked Skylar up almost instantly. She could almost imagine their mother and oldest child in the family, Maria, pouring batter into the waffle maker that Rodney had fixed when he was 12 as a project for robotics class. She could almost see the fresh strawberries and blueberries drizzled with maple syrup and butter...
"Hey sis, you just gonna stand there and drool??", Rodney said jokingly. Maria turned around and laughed lightheartedly. The 18-year-old was a tall, slender, black-haired girl. Her green eyes looked like fresh mint leaves come straight from the plant.
Today she wore a tank top two sizes too short, exposing her midriff. It was a hot, muggy evening so everyone was sweltering. Maria also wore some baggy gray pants that made her outfit even better and her light brown skin glow. Her bright green eyes observed them carefully. "Do you want waffles or not?", their mother asked questioningly.
Their mother was a short, thin woman with bags under her green eyes. Her black hair was messy and tangled. Skylar could see that she'd tried putting it into a bun, but it just showed that she wasn't alert or awake enough to do anything. "Skylar, come to the table, please.", her mother said. Skylar sat down at the table, mouth watering.
As Maria placed a plate of fresh waffles in front of her, Skylar almost jumped for her fork and knife. Maria yelped, "Geez, Sky! You almost took my arm off!" Skylar shrugged sheepishly and went back to eating waffles. After she finished, she downed her glass of milk, grabbed her skateboard and knee pads, and dashed out the door.
She put on her helmet, which had been lying on the curb, and jumped on her skateboard. She was just getting used to feeling the wind in her hair when she heard a yell. "Look out!!!" Skylar turned to her left and saw a boy on roller skates heading straight for her!
