Ivy?" asked someone from behind.
"We don't know any Ivy," Sao backed up. She was standing behind the Being's back.
"I think you're in the wrong camp, dude," added JJ.
"No, he's not," Ritael silenced them. "Enough of this chatter. Talk, where did you take Fairlight?"
The Invicta sent her a grateful look, as if he couldn't wait for the topic to finally come down to her friend. "She's in San Diego under the watchful eye of my father, which is why I'm here now. I need your help."
A murmur full of indignation spread through the room.
"What do you mean in San Diego?" Carter groaned out.
Harlyn, who was standing to her right, snorted in disbelief. "Famous last words. An Invicta needs humans' help. In what?"
"In getting her out of the city."
For a moment they were struck dumb. Ritael knew she couldn't believe anything that came out of his mouth, although she didn't hide the fact that she really wanted him to tell the truth.
"This is ridiculous," Carter declared, nodding in disbelief. "Do we really have to listen to this?"
"You took her, and now you want to give her back her freedom?" Ritael raised her eyebrows.
"Exactly, why such a change?" Ace backed her up.
The Being shrugged as much as possible, stretching the ropes binding it. "I've been changing my mind a lot lately."
"Not very convincing." She crossed her arms on her chest.
"I don't know what kind of answer you expect from me."
"A simple and straight one. Why did you change your mind and want to give her back to us?"
The Being looked so deeply into her eyes that Ritael's heart did a fearful somersault. "Because she's going to die."
