Sonic was being escorted via helicopter towards custody in human territory for crimes he's been framed for....but he escaped from it and went on a wild chase.
As Sonic was avoiding the authorities, some of the Freedom Fighters were working with their liaison to uncover what Eggman is up to that somehow framed Sonic for theft and destruction.
Their search leads them to find the facility Eggman broke into, finding he had freed an experiment being held there.
Though Sonic soon runs into this mystery experiment: a black and red hedgehog that is just as fast and powerful as he is named Shadow, a self proclaimed Ultimate Lifeform

Despite Sonic's best efforts, Shadow got away practically outmatching him....
....leaving Sonic to be captured again by the authorities.
Can our heroes capture Shadow and clear Sonic once and for all?

Prison Island: Nearby airspace
Tails was flying an improved Tornado in the skies, heading straight for an island out in the ocean, carrying two passengers with him.
"There it is....Prison Island, the most reinforced and well-defended island facility in the world." Tails says as he was getting close.
"Uh...tell me again why we're going to the same place Sonic's being held at?" Bopper asks Tails. "We're not seriously gonna break him out, are we?"
"According to my energy radar back at the base, G.U.N is holding a few Chaos Emeralds here on this island, this being one of their most important locations." Hip says as he was flying next to them on a winged jet pack.
"If that's right, then Eggman and that new hedgehog will show up here too so they can get the emeralds." Fury says to adds on. "If we can act fast, we can get evidence of the mystery hedgehog and show it to everyone so the truth will be out there, all while trying to foil them from getting the emeralds."
"Sally ain't gonna like this when she finds out we were out here doing this to possibly free Sonic too." Bopper tells them all.
"I'll take the fall for you guys and claim this was my idea even if it means I'll get kicked off the team." Fury assures Bopper and the others.
Tails spots Amy down below being cornered by Eggman riding his mech walker.
"Hang on guys....I'm about to land and transform!"
The young fox flies down towards the island below, heading to rescue Amy from Eggman.
