This story has been left open and unfinished for WAY to long. So I formally apologize and promise to better in the future. thanks and once again, enjoy :D

Chapter Six.

Action and Consequence.

*The present*

All around me people were strewn around the room. Some sitting uncomfortably with their backs to the walls coughing and moaning, others lying on the ground, painful groans and whales emanating from their haggard suffering bodies. As poorly as I'd done, and hungry as I'd gotten, it was nothing compared to what these people had endured. The walls around me were dirty and moist, you could smell the mold in the air, it seemed barely tolerable, though it was better then being outside.

The room I was reluctant to call 'the mess hall' was long and narrow, what it was used for before I couldn't fathom, and at its end stood two armed guards, each carrying M4 A1 carbines. In between the two stern men was a scrawny Asian woman, her hair long and messily kept. She wore a dirty and tattered white apron around her waist. In her arms she held a steaming pot of what appeared to be stew, or perhaps some other sort of gruel, which she individually served to each person in the line. To anyone else, she would have seemed unremarkable, just one more person fate had taken a cruel and undeserving vengeance on.

But to me... there was something else. Something in her eyes that drew to her presence. Something beyond the outer hard shell of perpetual sadness and hurt that the past year had forced on her and everyone else in the room. I couldn't help but see the ever flowing streams of beauty that lay just beneath the surface of her frown. It was as though if she were to smile, everything would be right with the world, giving all that saw it a sense of hope.

It was several moments before I felt Sammy tugging at my side, pulling me out my trance. “Hmm?” I mumbled under my breath as I turned my attention back to the little girl at my side. I glanced down into her bright green eyes. “Right, I'm sorry, I was just... distracted. Come on, lets get a spot in line then.”

The line for the most part moved fairly quickly, as everyone was hungry and eager to get their day's rations. Person after person everyone each stepped forward after the last, holding out their bowl to the woman at the end of the line. She then proceed to scoop a ladle full of stew into their bowl. This was done so orderly it seemed almost like second nature to these people, it made me wonder. How long had this gone on? Each of their faces bore the story of a broken spirit, crushed under the heel of circumstance non to different from the last. I used to think It was a curse, to suffer alone surviving on my own, but perhaps it was more of a blessing then I realized. In doing so I had erected walls of seclusion around myself, and until now I hadn't realized that perhaps was to protect myself from more then just physical danger, maybe I was afraid to care about anyone... maybe I as afraid to lose anyone else...

It was only moments before we had neared the front of the line. In that time a few others had gathered behind us, the line never seemed to get shorter. When it was our turn, one of the guards saw we were empty handed, and offered us each a bowl off of the stack of clean ones from the small table to his left. I nodded in response as we both gratefully took them.
