Chapter Five.
Then... And Now.
Twenty two years ago.
The sweet scent of flowers floated across the humid summer breeze. A stout tree branch was clenched tightly in my hands as I bounded gracefully down the long line of hay bales. With each stride I took I cleared another whole hay bale, gaining more and more forward momentum. Despite the speed I was building, my pursuer was gaining on me fast. I quickly glanced back, trying to get some sort of idea just how far back he actually was.
The boy was tall. He had wavy dark blond hair that curled out like wings around his head in every direction. The dirt and filth that covered his face completely hid the freckles around his nose. His eyes were plain dark brown. He also held a stick in his hand. A slight smile crept upon his lips as he noticed me look back at him. He knew I couldn't out run him, and he obviously enjoyed lording his superiority over me. At least... that's what I thought his smile was about...
My eyes widened as I turned around and saw what lay ahead of me. Not more then ten feet in front of me the long line of hay bales ended. Panic gripped me as my first instinct was to try and stop. Though I knew the attempt was futile, because I was moving to fast to stop in such short a distance, I tried anyway. Instead of stopping, I tripped over myself and went tumbling forward.
Luckily for me the grass this time of year was tall, and there was some stray hay on the ground where I landed. I hit the ground with a loud thump. Staring up from the flat of my back I heard laughter ring out form above me. I let out a deep sigh, audibly expressing my embarrassment and frustration. Just then I saw the boy who had been perusing me earlier peak off the edge. He was still roaring with laughter as he saw me laying there.
“Your such a klutz!” he said aloud trying to control his laughter, “Why don't you watch where you're going next time Nate?”
“Its not fair!” I grumbled angrily, “You're two years older Tom! Why do we always have to play against each other? How come we can never be on the same team?”
“What fun would that be?” said Tom, still with a slight chuckle.
“It would be a lot more fun then the way we play now! You always win! Its not fair!”
“Life's not fair. Its survival of the fittest! Now are you hurt or do you just like laying there on the ground?”
“I'm fine” I said as I stood up and dusted myself off. Just as I was about to open my mouth to argue with Tom some more I heard a voice call out from in the distance.
“LUNCH TIME!”
It was Sammy, my little sister. Well, step sister really. My dad died when I was just a baby, and my mom got remarried to a guy named Jim when I was three. Jim was a farmer. He wasn't the richest, or the most glamourous guy in the world, but one thing I remember about Jim was that he always put food on the table for us, and he was always there when we needed him.
