Chapter Four.

The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend.

The Present.

I sat watching the embers of our small fire slowly die out. Carefully I slid back my sleeve, glancing at my watch, all the while being careful not to wake Sammy. Sammy was still curled up tightly against me fast asleep. I smiled and stroked a strand of her hair away from her face. I couldn’t help but think, what if things had been different? What if I had gotten married and had a family? I had never really thought of myself as a family man, or someone who end up with a bunch of kids, not until now anyway… Now I couldn’t help but wonder if I was missing out on something.

8:12 Am Read my watch

We needed to get moving. I gently nudged Sammy until her eyes slowly opened. She carefully sat up, trying to rid herself from the urge to go back to sleep.

“Aren’t you a sound sleeper?” I said with a smile, Sammy just yawned and stretched in reply. “It’s morning now, I think we should get moving. Can you help me?” Sammy put her arm around my shoulder, helping me to my feet. Though she was small, she was strong for her age. All the same I tried not to rely on her too much.

My leg was extremely sore, but at least I could walk. Sammy helped me down the hallway. Towards the end, the hallway curved right, leading to a narrow staircase and door. Carefully we climbed the steps together, and made it to the door. Sunlight exploded into the room as I opened the door, forcing us both to shield our eyes.

Slowly I pulled my arm away from my eyes, letting myself adapt to the light. But before my vision could become clear, a terrible smell hit me. Fear and aggression rose up inside as I thrust Sammy behind me, and slipped my bow off my shoulder. The first thing I saw was a small group of infected charging towards us. There were only about thirty or forty of them, most likely a small group that had decided to linger in the area after the main horde, that had chased me yesterday, dispersed.

I quickly pulled an arrow from the built in quiver on the side of my bow. As I drew the arrow back my shoulder throbbed painfully. It was brutal but I had no other choice. The arrow darted off as I released the string, piercing one of the infected right between the eyes. I quickly grabbed Sammy and pulled her out the door, heading in the opposite direction of the infected. My thinking was that we couldn’t head back down into the utility tunnel; if we did it would only be a matter of time before the infected broke through the door.

“Stay behind me!” I said to Samantha as I fired off two more arrows, and killing two more infected. I knew full and well I could never kill them all, not before they reached us. There was nothing I could do.

They were coming fast, faster than I could kill them. I quickly turned around trying to run, but the best I could do with my leg was limp quickly. It was extremely painful, but I managed put all my concentration into staying alive, completely dismissing any thoughts of pain. I pulled Samantha as I went; I glanced around at my surroundings, hoping that there might be some way to escape. The only way out was towards the street, past the group of unread which stood in our way.
