I’ve been walking around for about thirty minutes looking for Ari, and it’s starting to wear me out. People are giving me weird looks, and the place reeks of alcohol and drugs. Some people are drunk, others are high. I just hope I find Ari in time.
I stand by the stairs and glance around. I should call David... ah, what's the point? She wouldn’t hear her phone over the blaring music.
“Miley,” someone says, tapping my shoulder. I turn to see Tobi, my old lab partner. He looks a little drunk.
“Tobi?”
“It’s been a while!” he says, taking a swig from his cup. “You’re not the party type. What’re you doing here?”
“I came with David.”
“Oh, of course. Did she dress you up? Because you look sexy as hell.”
Yeah, he’s definitely drunk.
“Thanks, I guess. Hey, do you know where Ari is?”
“Who?” He leans in closer, trying to hear me over the music.
“Ari. He’s a basketball player, about six feet tall, brown hair, really cute—”
“Okay, okay, I don’t know who Arizona is, but if you’re looking for the basketball guys, they’re upstairs in Class 3D. Maybe Arizona, or whatever, is there.”
“It’s Ari.”
“Yeah, whatever. And when you’re done with the jocks, come find me. Let me help you take that dress off.” He winks before stumbling away. Definitely high. Anyway, I’ve got to find Ari.
I climb the stairs, and after what feels like forever, I reach the top and start searching for Class 3D. I hear laughter from one of the rooms—this must be them.
The door is slightly open, so I peek inside. I spot Ari sitting with a group of guys, probably his teammates. He looks so handsome.
“Okay, Miley, you’ve found him. You’ve got this... Wait, what am I supposed to do? Walk in? Say something? Ugh, I should’ve asked David for advice. Great, I’ve screwed this up.”
“Dude, are you messing with Mindy?” someone inside asks. Mindy? Who’s that?
“Who’s Mindy?” Ari asks, tossing his empty can into the trash.
“That fat girl you’ve been hanging out with.”
“Hell no!” Ari exclaims. “I’d never hook up with her. She’s not even my type.”
“Then why are you always with her?” another guy asks.
“She’s always hanging around me. Plus, we’re neighbors. It’s super annoying.”
“She might like you.”
“Maybe, but I’d never go for someone like her. She’s just too fat.”
Fat. The word that’s been used to describe me so many times, but I never thought I’d hear Ari say it.
I take off my glasses and wipe my tears. Coming here was a mistake. What was I thinking? How could I ever believe Ari would like someone like me?
I rush down the stairs, pushing past the crowd. I need to get out of here. There’s nothing here for me.
As I try to escape, I bump into someone, spilling their drink all over them.
“What the hell? Are you blind?” I look up and see Noah, his eyes blazing with anger. Oh God.
The music dies down, and everyone around us starts gathering.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” I mutter.
“Jesus, is that you, Mickey?” someone shouts from the crowd.
“She looks like a sack of beans!” another person yells, and the crowd bursts into laughter.
A sack of beans... Is that what I look like?
“Get out of here!” someone else shouts.
“Weirdo!” I hear from the crowd. Everyone’s staring, pointing, and laughing. I glance back at Noah, but he just looks disgusted.
“I’m sorry,” I mutter again, pushing past him and running out.
I walk home, tears streaming down my face, replaying the humiliation from just minutes ago. Ari... I never should’ve gone to that stupid party. What was I thinking?
When I get home, I find my mom asleep on the couch. She must have been waiting for me. The sound of the door closing wakes her.
“Oh, chica, you’re home early,” she says with a yawn.
“Yeah, the party got boring, so I left,” I lie.
“Where’s David?”
“She stayed behind.”
“Oh, well, do you want to watch a movie or something?”
“No, I just want to go to my room.” She lowers her head and sighs.
“Alright, dear. Goodnight.” I sigh and head upstairs to my room.
I need to get out of this stupid dress. I change into my pajamas and collapse onto my bed. I grab my *Blinding Lights* novel and sigh. Maybe I’m not meant to have a prince charming after all.
