Mileys POV

Monday Morning

Another school day, another day to face reality—how great. I lazily get out of bed and head to the bathroom. After taking a bath and getting dressed, I brush my hair when my phone beeps. I pick it up and see a message from Noah:

“Get me a Decade Latte.”

It read:
*“Bring it to the parking lot. I’ll be waiting.”*

Of course, how could I forget? I lost my freedom three days ago. I put down my phone and sigh. Day one of being Noah’s personal stooge starts now.

As I walk out of my house, I hear someone yelling my name. I look in the direction of the voice and see Ari walking out of his house.

No, no, no, not this morning. I’m honestly too tired, and I can't even think about running. I sigh and wait in the driveway as he approaches, hanging his bag over his shoulder. I take a step back, avoiding eye contact.

“Thank God, I thought you’d run,” he says.

“Can I help you?” I ask bluntly.

“What’s going on, Miley?” I don’t respond, keeping my gaze fixed on the ground. “You’ve been avoiding me, ghosting me, and whenever I ask David about it, she tries to hit me. I feel like I’ve done something wrong, but I don’t know what it is.”

Unbelievable. Has he suddenly forgotten what he said about me?

“Ari, I have to go, or I’ll be late for school.”

“I don’t care, Miley. I deserve an explanation. I thought we were cool—what happened? What did I do?” He places his hand on my shoulder. “I at least deserve to know why you keep running away from me.”

I sigh and push his hand off my shoulder. Here we go.

“At the party—your team’s victory party—I was looking for you. I searched the entire school because I wanted to tell you something important. I finally found you with some guys—probably your teammates. They asked you about me, and you said having me around and the fact that we’re neighbors is *‘fucking annoying.’* You also said you could never like me because I’m *‘too fat.’*"

I look up at him, and there’s a shocked expression on his face.

“Yeah, I couldn’t believe it either. But I guess it is what it is.” I try to walk away, but he grabs my arm.

“Miley, wait! I can explain.”

I yank my arm free. “I don’t want to hear your explanation, Ari. I get it. I irritate you, and you don’t want to be around me. It’s fine.”

“Just listen—”

“I don’t want to listen! You’re a fake, two-faced person who insults me behind my back. I have enough people like that in my life. Let’s just stop talking to each other. We managed for six years before—we can do it again.” I take a deep breath and turn away. “Goodbye, Ari,” I say before walking off.

Well, that was something. I never thought I’d have the courage to face him again, but I’m glad I did. Now, off to school—or rather, the coffee shop.

I finally arrive at school, holding Noah’s coffee. I head to the parking lot and spot him leaning against his car.

“Good morning,” I say, handing him the cup.

He snatches it from me without a word and turns his back.

“You’re late.”

“I’m sorry. I had to deal with something.”
