Mileys POV
It turns out that everyone at school believes I'm sleeping with Noah, which I find strange. I’m just his tutor—nothing more. Why would Noah Grant ever want to sleep with me?
But their assumptions aren’t my only concern. The real problem is that the other girls at school are glaring at me like they want to kill me. I tried to find Noah to talk about it, but he seems to have disappeared. My life feels ruined.
“Are you okay?” someone asks, tapping me on the shoulder.
I snap out of my thoughts to face the person; it’s one of the school janitors.
“Are you alright?” she asks again. “You look a bit pale.”
Thanks for noticing, but no, I’m not. Do you know how it feels to have people glaring at you everywhere you go? “I’m alright, thank you.” She nods and walks away. I take off my glasses to clean them; I need to get to class.
I'm so glad school is over. It felt like those glares were going to kill me. Honestly, even if I were sleeping with Noah, which I’m not, I wouldn't be the first girl he’d sleep with. Why is mine so special?
Even as I stand in the parking lot waiting for David, I can still feel people looking at me. Where is David, anyway? My phone rings, and I answer it.
“Hey, Miley! I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, but I had to leave school early to take care of some things. I’ll meet you later at your place.”
Is she joking, or is she serious?
“Hello? Miley? Are you mad?”
“No, no, David, it’s okay. I have to get to work anyway.”
“Alright, bye, and bring sushi home,” she says before hanging up.
“Great,” I sigh, looking around. Almost everyone at school is gone. “I better start heading out.”
“There you are,” Cody’s voice makes me freeze. “I knew I’d find you.” He stops in front of me and punches me in the face, making me fall to the ground. He kicks me, then kicks me again, directly in my ribs.
“You thought you could run away, you fat bitch? Is that what you thought?” he yells, and I just cover my face.
“Will you do the assignment or not?”
“I’ll do it,” I whimper, fighting back tears.
“I didn’t hear you, Morales,” he says, kicking me again.
“I said I’ll do it!”
“Good girl,” he sneers, throwing a textbook at me. “Finish it up before Friday,” he laughs as he walks away.
I bury my face in my legs and cry. Why is this happening to me? After a while, I take off my glasses and wipe my eyes with my sweatshirt. My entire body hurts. I get up and dust off my clothes; I need to get to work.
When I arrive at work, Tami immediately shoves a towel into my arms as I walk through the door.
“Where have you been? I’ve been handling both our shifts!”
“I’m sorry; I was delayed.”
“Yeah, yeah, excuse you.” She pauses when she sees me. “What happened to your face, and why are you so dirty?”
“Um, I fell on my way here.”
“Oh, go clean up and get started.”
I nod and head straight into the kitchen. Is my life going to be like this forever? Am I going to be beaten up every day? I stare enviously at a happy couple sharing a plate of sushi. Isn’t love wonderful?
