Miley's POV

"Miley, hurry down or your breakfast will get cold! Or I could just eat it for you," David shouts from downstairs.

"Coming!" I call back.

Today, I’m about to do something I never thought I would, and to be honest, I’m terrified. But hey, what’s the worst that could happen?

I slip into a sky-blue sweatshirt and matching blue pants. I let my hair down, securing it with a headband, and slide into my trusty All-Star sneakers. The final touch? My glasses.

I rush downstairs to find David already munching on a sandwich.

"Hey, you’re here," she says, her mouth full.

"Yes, yes, I am."

"Hey, chica," my mom greets from the kitchen.

"Morning, Mom," I reply.

"I made sandwiches. Come join us."

"Um, thanks, but I’m not hungry," I say, trying to sound casual.

"Oh," she responds, and though I hear the disappointment in her voice, I push past it. I take a deep breath and gather my courage. Here goes nothing.

"Could we borrow your car to drive to school?" I ask abruptly. David nearly chokes on her food and stares at me, wide-eyed.

"What?!" she exclaims.

"Do you want me to repeat it?" I ask calmly.

"Miley, are you feeling okay?" she asks, approaching me with concern.

"I’m fine, David."

"You just asked to borrow your mom’s car."

"And?"

"You hate car rides!"

"Well, I’ve had a change of heart."

"This is about Noah, isn’t it?" she accuses, folding her arms.

"No, it isn’t," I reply quickly, feeling my cheeks heat up. "You still have your driver’s license, right?"

"Permit, yeah."

"Good," I say, turning to my mom. "So, can we, Mom?"

"Well, I’m free today, so sure. It’s not a problem. I’ll get the keys."

"Oh, yeah! We’re driving to school!" David cheers, doing her usual little victory dance.

This is it, folks. I’m driving to school. Well, technically, David’s driving, but I’m getting in the car, so it counts.

As we drive through the streets, I ask David to stop by Mr. Walter’s house. He’s on his porch, as usual, rocking in his chair.

"Good morning, Mr. Walter!" I shout out the window.

"Dear Lord, Miley! Is that you in a car?" he calls back, squinting.

"Yup, it’s me!"

"Well, praise the Lord!"

"Hallelujah!" David chimes in, laughing.

"Hey, Dave," Mr. Walter greets her.

"Hi, Walter," she says.

"I just stopped by to say good morning," I add.

"Well, good morning to you too. Have a lovely day at school, both of you."

"We will!" I say as David drives off.

When we arrive at school, David parks the car. "Ready?" she asks, turning to me.
